Mojo Monday: Get Ready For Detox and Cleansing With Green Juice

Do you ever feel all gummed up inside- heavy, weighted down, fatigued, and emotionally knotted? I know I do, but in the past I wasn’t even aware of it. It wasn’t until I did a green juice cleanse that I awoke to how much I needed to do it. Tricia Barrett, the living foods expert who owns Green Resurrection, a supplier of homemade raw foods and green juice, shares her passionate beliefs about why we should cleanse.

Cleansing:

1. Radically reduces the effects of aging by rejuvenating your cells.

2. Creates abundant energy.

3. Promotes weight loss and increased metabolism.

4. Strengthens the immune system.

5. Helps the body maximize its potential to heal from chronic illness.

6. Supports liver function and other vital organs.

7. Restores antioxidants.

8. Maximizes absorption of essential nutrients and aids digestion.

9. Supports healthy brain chemistry, which may help with mood disorders.

10. Balances your hormones.

11. Beautifies the skin.

12. Generates confidence, enthusiasm and joyfulness, enabling you to achieve the life you desire.

Doesn’t that sound like Owning Your Health? So what do I mean by cleansing? Our bodies are barraged every day with chemicals, toxins, and other substances from our food, the products we use in our house, the water we drink, the air we breathe- our entire earthly environment, really. Our bodies are meant to be self-cleaning organisms, and our cellular metabolism is brilliantly designed to rid our bodies of unwanted toxins. I’m sure it worked well when we lived in caves and ate the berries we collected from the wilderness. Even a relatively short time ago, before the industrial revolution and commercial farms, our bodies could probably keep up. But these days, forget it! We can’t avoid being toxically overdosed, even if we eat healthy diets, choose household products consciously, filter our water, and live in the country. Which means that our cells get clogged with toxins, instead of processing and metabolizing waste material so we can eliminate it through our kidneys, our liver, our colon, and our skin. What happens when all this waste jams up our cells? We get sick and depressed, we age and wither, we gain weight, get pimples, and lose our precious vitality. In essence, we lose our mojo.

Let's Cleanse Together, Pinkies!

To demonstrate our commitment to Owning Pink together, I would like to propose that we all join together for a ceremonial and physically healing group cleanse. Who do you think? Are you up for it? It requires a commitment, but I promise you won’t regret it. What would cleansing require?

You will need:

7 days to pre-cleanse and 5 days for the cleanse

A juicer

Organic produce (they can be ordered online if you don’t have access to organic produce locally)

Sun chlorella and systemic enzymes

A little bit of will-power

A mind willing to suspend judgment and allow cleansing to happen as deeply as possible

(Don't worry. When the time comes, I'll tell you which brands I recommend and where to get your supplies.)

You in?

What do you think? Will you do it? I found my cleanse experience to be a very eye-opening journey- a truly empowering experience. (For more about my cleanse experience, click here). I want to share that experience with you at home. Honestly, it changed my life. Now, I know we’re all inundated with crazy diet advice, but this isn’t some nutty weight loss scheme. This is bigger than that. This is a physical, emotional, spiritual cleanse we’re talking about. As a physician, I have seen remarkable transformations in everyone I’ve witnessed during the cleansing process. We all have different constitutions, so of course, you never know how your own body/mind/spirit will respond to cleansing. But unless you suffer froman eating disorder, it can’t hurt, and it just might heal you. (If you do suffer from disordered eating, I don’t recommend cleansing with the group. You may still benefit from some careful detoxification, but I hope you’ll do that under the counsel of a doctor, therapist, and nutritionist. I do want to protect any Pinkies out there who need more support than I can offer online).

Please, tell me what you think. Have any of you cleansed before? If so, how was it for you? Did you have any good/bad responses to it? How did it change you? Do any of you drink green juice or eat a raw foods diet? Fill me in! I’m reading, studying, and grilling doctors every day, but I still have much to learn.

Post your comments and tell me whether this is something you want to do. I’m thinking we’ll do it in 3 months or so, so you can all start preparing mentally for what we’re going to do. If you’re in, set your intention now.

Your Mojo Monday exercise:

  1. Grab your journal and jot down a paragraph about why you want to cleanse.
  2. Write 3 affirmations beginning with words like “May I, I am, I will, Let me…” regarding what needs cleansing in your life.
  3. Commit to our group cleanse, and stay tuned for further instructions to guide you on how to do this in your neck of the woods. Don’t worry. We’ll tell you exactly what you need to know here at Owning Pink.

When do you all think we should do this? Pre-holidays? Post-holidays? I'm thinking either week of October 19 or January 4. (Impossible to cleanse DURING the holidays! Too many functions, too much food, too hard). What date do you vote for?

Cleansing love and green veggies,

Lissa

Count me in. The sooner the better. Doing a cleanse has been on my mind for awhile and I would love having the support from others. October is my choice! I do juice and eat whole grains and have a vitamix that I love. I tried fruit fasting before but it's been years. Thanks for the exciting idea!

Okay, I posted this on your

Okay, I posted this on your mistake column but will transfer it here. I can't do it now due to traveling and winter has just set in here. It's 32 out right now. I want to do the cleanse again when I come this winter. Tricia, will it be offered in Jan or Feb? I found it somewhat difficult to do, to be honest but it gave me such great results that I want to repeat it. I’d been having terrific stomach issues right after I ate and had such bad diarrhea that I thought I might have to be hospitalized. Multiple expensive tests resulted nothing significant. So Lissa suggested the cleanse. I thought I can do anything for five days. At the end, my stomach issues were gone. Why? NO one really seems to know but who cares if they are gone. Now I notice I have some of them returning occasionally. So why not repeat the very thing that solved it before. Hope I can at that time! Love you Tricia! You’re the best. Trish

Debbie, You make me smile. I wish you lived closer so I could let you taste my green juice! I bring it to work with me and often give shots to my patients. Because it looks like pond scum, they're often shocked that it tastes as good as it does. I genuinely like the taste. But that's just me...You can definitely experiment with making green juice taste more like YOU.

I was going to post the details about it tomorrow, but then this whole thing with the swine flu vaccine kept coming up, so it will have to wait until next week. But I will be posting details:

Your basic shopping list will be= For green juice: Kale, celery, cucumber, lemon (lots) ginger, jalapeno, sprouts (all optional)

For seaweed broth: beet, onion, celery, carrot, seaweed (like dulce or other type of seaweed, available at Whole Foods and health food stores)

More soon! xoxo Lissa

Wow - I've been watching the

Wow - I've been watching the movement towards this green cleanse coming up in Oct. I'm curious, interested, and anxious each time of think of it. I have to admit - I'm lacking the confidence in believing I would be brave enough to pull this off! It seems to be a constant internal argument for me. It looks disgusting. It sounds like a great opportunity. It uses organic - great! It uses organic - I'm not to wiffy in this area with local purchases. I can order online - Whoa - I will have to order online. This might work! - I will fail! And the internal conflict continues. I am trying to dare to believe I could be strong enough to try this and actually make it thru the whole 12 days inspite of knowing I nearly puke at the sight and will have to wear a clothes pin on my nose along with the blindfold. And yes - I know this is tortured writing. It is hard to set such an intent with food / nutrition for me. And that in itself is disturbing. So - Do you already have a place that I have overlooked that totally lays out what I will have to buy. I want to get more used to the idea and the 'grocery list'. Shew...... thanks for babysitting!

I just might do it! Thinking...thinking. Will it be hard to do while working a 9 - 5 job? Should I take a vacation? Hmmmm. So many thoughts. I love this idea!

The way we're gonna do this

The way we're gonna do this cleanse, you'll need a juicer or someone who can make your juice for you (my friend Tricia is putting together a mail order cleanse, where green juice will be delivered to your door, but it's not ready yet).

A high speed blender like Vitamix or Blendtec can be used, but it's much more time consuming to blend, then strain, the juice.

As for taste testing, find a juice bar and see if they have any juice made with cukes, celery, kale- that kind of thing. You can have them add carrot or apple if you can't stand the unsweetened green juice.

hiya. question: can this be done with a good blender or does it have to be a juicer? are there any recipes you have handy for someone like me to "taste test" a few items now before committing 'whole hog', as it were to the cleanse?

Oh, good, Heather! It's a great jump start to reclaiming your body, especially after pregnancy and all the chaos your body experiences during that time. Glad to have you on board!

k girl- im in- i wanna see what this can do. I feel like ive been fighting my body for the past 18 months while it settles down from age and 15 years of pregnancy/nursing hormones. Time to reset the controls for the next 2 decades.

You can do it, Sarah! That's why I want to do this all together. So we can support each other. We'll post about the process every day for a week, and we can join in, share troubles we might be having, bitch and moan if need be, revel in our triumphs, and get through. I found my first cleanse experience to be very empowering just from realizing that I do have the willpower to do something like this. You do too, especially with the support of all your fellow Pinkies! Pinkies up, girlfriend!

My new juicer arrives some

My new juicer arrives some time today! I've been 'green juicing' every other day or so for past couple months. I'm willing...but can I do it, will I be able to stick with it with my schedule, plain old..will I stick to it--just because I'm me and soooo fricking unable to stick with this sorta thing despite the best of intentions?

I just picked veggies from my garden-wheat grass is ready(started growing it a week ago)..and have other sprouts in various stages of growth.

Sooo.tentatively...here I am.
