How To Save The World: The PinkEffect

Lissa Rankin's picture

heart_of_heartsHiya Pinkies. I have to share something thrilling with you all.

One Pinkie sent me this beautiful clip about saving the developing world one girl at a time. It's called The GirlEffect. This Pinkie said, "What if we did the same thing but called it The PinkEffect? What if, instead of focusing on the plights of the developing world, we try to save the developed world one Pinkie at a time? What if our limitations aren't hunger, HIV, dirty water, and arranged marriage in our teens but disconnection, depression, addiction, broken families, cancer, disempowerment, and soul sickness? What if we took what we have created in the Owning Pink Community- a place of unconditional love and acceptance where Pinkies are empowered to heal themselves and each other- and what if we took that out into the world? What if we imagined that every person at work, at school, at church, in our families- what if they were all treated like Pinkies? What if we open our hearts and lead from that place of love, not just online but in real life?

In our community, Pinkies bring their highest selves to the table. The guru within all of us comes out and shines its beautiful light. But we forget that we are always gurus- we call always bring love and healing out into the world. What if we used Owning Pink as a place to gather courage, to practice opening our hearts, and then we spread it like wildfire?

Could we change the world?

Watch this Pinkies- and imagine as you watch it that we're talking about all of us. The PinkEffect. Can't you see it? Are you in, Pinkies?

Inspired to save the world,

Lissa

Kim Half the Sky is on my

Kim Half the Sky is on my xmas wish list! So glad you felt it was worth the read. I can't wait. And I've been a supporter of Central Asia Institute (Greg M's nonprofit) for years. Greg is SUCH a Pinkie! And a perfect example of Lissa's point that men are just as important to the PinkEffect as women.

Thanks for bringing these two books to everyone's attention. So very important to the "new model" of saving the world... not one of charity but one of empowerment.

You know what, Kim- I'm not

You know what, Kim- I'm not even thinking about gender. What if ALL OF US did this- put on our magical eyes and viewed just one person in their real life as if this person is a Pinkie? But I will definitely put these books on my reading list.

THANK YOU!

I just finished reading Half

I just finished reading Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof which talks about this very thing and how if you educate a boy/man nothing changes but educate a woman/girl - everything changes. This book is a very good read - filled with stories of girls he has met around the world.

This past Friday night I attended a book signing by Greg Mortenson. He wrote the book, Three Cups of Tea. He's spent the last 19 years building schools in Afganistan and Pakistan for girls. He's from Minnesota (where I'm from) and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. There were 1200 people at this book siging (for his new book, Stones into Schools), and we waited 3 hours to get our books signed and to shake his hand and speak to him. Wow ... it was amazing ... to be in the presence of greatness.

Lissa This idea is pure love.

Lissa This idea is pure love. Thank you for seeing the world through magical eyes so that we may all appreciate the magical eyes we have too. I can't wait to start peering at people with magical pink-eye beams of light.
