The Power of Pussy: My First Weekend at Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts

Lissa Rankin's picture

Hiya Pinkies. Many of you met Regena Thomashauer (aka Mama Gena) a while back when I wrote about her after interviewing her for my upcoming book What’s Up Down There? Questions You’d Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend (St. Martin’s Press, Sept 2010). Now, I’m blessed to be able to experience Mama Gena in the flesh (and I’m talking about some juicy Goddess flesh here!) I just finished the first of four rounds of becoming a Sister Goddess at Mama Gena’s School of the Womanly Arts, and I’m so excited to share this journey with all you Pinkies.

As it turns out, we Pinkies have a lot in common with Mama Gena’s Sister Goddesses. Yes, we have some Pink Gods here and Regena’s school is all about being a woman. But both of us revolve around stirring up the juicy life force that lies within us all. And that message is universal.

Same thing, different words

The language we each use to describe the vitality that makes us radiant, vibrant, sexy, compelling, and whole is slightly different. I call it “Mojo.” Mama Gena calls it “Pussy.” But it’s the same thing. It’s that connection to Divine Source, that plugging into the body, the earth, and the spirit, that connection in community that reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. It’s that journey to becoming a channel for the Universe to flow through us. And it ROCKS, Pinkies!

What We Did

So what did we do this weekend at the School of the Womanly Arts? Well, sorry dear ones. I can’t tell you. We’ve been sworn to secrecy, not because Mama Gena doesn’t want all of you to know what we’re up to but because she doesn’t want us to scare you off. All I’ll say is that 200+ women gathered in a room together with the intention of unleashing our highest potential. And it was- at once- completely irreverent and divinely holy. Think the Red Tent meets Sex and the City meets vajazzling meets Mother Earth meets the Goddess.

But what did we talk about? We talked about PUSSY. Yes, Pussy. As in the Womantra “I have a pussy, and as such, I am powerful, beautiful, radiant, vital, and Divine.” As in I am part of a collective consciousness that reverberates with womanly juice. As in women gathering in community to love, to move, to touch, to heal, to connect. As in OWNING the part of us that makes us uniquely female, the part that defines us as creatixes of the world. Mama Gena says, “A woman who owns her pussy owns her life.” And so it shall be.

Loving Our Girlytude

How does that strike you, Pinkies? Are you cringing at the word “pussy?” Does it offend you? If Mama Gena’s word doesn’t do it for you (personally, I prefer “Yoni” or “Coochie”), then pick your own word. Name your girlytude. LOVE her. Revere her. Embrace her. Thank her for giving you the gift of being a woman.

Because being a woman kicks ass (no offense to all you Pink Gods out there!). As women, we get to live from our hearts, rock from our souls, and connect in community in a way men rarely do. We get to dress in swirly confections, wear red lipstick, indulge in pedicures, and strut our hot PINK stuff.

We get to possess a clitoris, which bears 8,000 nerve endings dedicated to our pleasure. (8,000! The head of the penis only has half of that. Go figure. Good thinking, Goddess.) We get to create humanity. Every powerful person who has inhabited this world has done so through the vessel of womanhood. We are blessed to have the opportunity to carry another life inside of us, to bring life forth into the world, to give birth. We are gifted creators, spirits, and hearts. We love without limit. We nurture ourselves and others. We are women, hear us ROAR.

And Yet ….

Too many of us have given this power away. We have squelched our femininity in order to get ahead in a man’s world. We have let others diminish us, and in so doing, have diminished ourselves. We have locked away our femininity in some dark closet stuffed with boas and diamonds. We have rejected the very essence of what makes us whole. It’s no wonder we suffer from such soul sickness.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can reclaim what is our birthright. We can OWN Pussy, shout it from the rooftops, and do the can-can in celebration of who we are.

By the end of my first weekend of the School of the Womanly Arts, I was sobbing, not just because I was so moved by the courage, strength, and beauty of my fellow Sister Goddesses, but because I realized how much I have disconnected from myself in search of something outside of me, how much I have sold out to get ahead in a man’s world. I discovered that, even though I have dedicated my life to honoring the feminine in others, I have failed to do the same for myself.

Remembering My Power

Being with Mama Gena and the Sister Goddesses was like getting broken into a million little pieces and realizing that the way to reconnect was to piece together the fragments, like parts of a jigsaw puzzle, into a collective that is much bigger than myself, that is truly the Divine within us all. When I pulled myself together after my sob fest, I gaped, open-mouthed, in awe of the beauty that is woman. I felt spent, but in a good way, reinvigorated by the power of Pussy. I feel so proud to be a woman.

And so I sit here at JFK airport, about to wave goodbye to the Big Apple, with a new spring in my step. I am a woman, and I have a pussy. Can’t you just see me jiving, bouncing, and grooving through the security line? Is that why all these people are looking at me? Are they thinking, like Rob Reiner’s mother in When Harry Met Sally, “I want what she’s having?”

I don’t know. But I do believe we can ALL have that. We can all OWN our wholeness, revel in the divine Source within us, and wind up supercharged, plugged in, and full. Remember- you already have all that you need to have all that you want.

What about you, Pinkies? Do you love being a woman? What gets you jazzed about being a girl? Do you love your pussy? Do you own your life?

Yes, you can. I’m here, linked arm in arm with all the Sister Goddesses and all you Pinkies, to cheer you on as you journey back to YOU.

Feeling completely pussified,

Lissa

PS. If you're dying to know more, read Regena's book, Mama Gena's School of the Womanly Arts: Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way With The World. Buy it here. It's FAB! And don't worry. The Mastery program I'm taking will be offered again next spring.

If ALL the women in the world

If ALL the women in the world banded together and refused to put out until they got their way, could they rule the world?

I always thought "the hand the rocks the cradle rules the world."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysistrata

Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end The Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace, a strategy however that inflames the battle between the sexes.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell is a new documentary about how the woman of Liberia came together to end their country's long and bloody civil war. In 2002, Christian and Muslim women formed an alliance to demand peace; armed only with matching white t-shirts, the activists staged silent protests and organized a summit between their president and warlord rebels, physically refusing to allow delegates to leave until an agreement had been reached. In the clip above, the women discuss one of their other effective tactics, holding a sex strike until a cease-fire was declared. The film won the award for best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival and opens today in New York. Release dates for other cities and additional clips are on the film's website.

Town where women rule to be built in Chongqing

"The world's first 'women's town,' where women rule and men are punished for disobedience, is being planned in Chongqing."

In China, Mosuo Women Rule

"In almost every way, this is a society where women rule the roost. They run the households, control the money, and own the land and property, all to be inherited by sisters and daughters.

"It may sound bizarre to a Western visitor, but anthropologists say because the men have no power, control no land, and play subservient sexual roles, they have nothing to fight over — making this one of the most harmonious societies on the planet. The Mosuo people, estimated to number around 50,000, have no word for war, no murders, no rapes, no jails."

Yes, Dana. Amen, sister. I

Yes, Dana. Amen, sister. I too love the idea of the divine feminine as the portal to something even richer, even deeper, even more integrated into our whole being.

One man once told me that he needed to Own Pink in order to reclaim his true masculine, that the safety of the feminine allowed him to nurture what was truly masculine within him.

How lovely that we have co-created a place where we can do both.

Dana- This is so beautifully

Dana-

This is so beautifully said! YES to the dance of the divine feminine and the divine masculine. Thank you for mentioning this. I adore that swirling dance of energies. And, "a portal to deeper and more resonant magic," so well said, as always. Such a pleasure to hear your voice. xoxo

Lissa Wonderful view into

Lissa

Wonderful view into what was obviously a fantastic weekend. I love the energy of your words. But I got drawn to this: "Do you love being a woman? What gets you jazzed about being a girl? Do you love your pussy?"

I do love being a woman. I haven't always, but over the years I've come to appreciate the deep, powerful and yet incredibly subtle complexity of the feminine energy. And I am in awe of it's dance with the masculine. For me, the dance is joy. The gorgeous beauty of the whole is the energy that excites me. I can have fun with my womanly self, woman parts and woman friends, but when I mix my energy in the universal whole energy (wither in the presence of a man or simply engaging my own more masculine energies) a deeper and more holy amazing power is born in and around me. I love how this manifests in the physical world and in the worlds less clear to our human eyes.

To me, this is the true beauty of being a woman. The fact that I - as a woman - am more fearless and accepting of my whole and the whole of the others I meet. This is why I believe this truth you/we are tapping into - that the Divine Feminine will lead forth the Divine Masculine - will help us all become more comfortable with our simple and yet deeply powerful divinity....

So do I love my pussy? Sure. For lots of reasons. But to me it is merely a portal to deeper and more resonant magic.

I'm so glad that your weekend married the fun and the spiritual depth of femininity. Mama Gena sounds like a truly powerful figure. I look forward to seeing her in action myself someday.

Love, Light and Womanly Blessings ~Dana

For those reading the book ~ I HIGHLY recommend reading it with friends and getting together to discuss and practice the tools (the 'womanly arts') ~ creating a community of practice (as all pinkies know) is hugely beneficial!

Sister Goddess Lissa, I have

Sister Goddess Lissa,

I have been a student of The School of Womanly Arts for several years and could never quite find the words to describe it as it is so experiential and often misunderstood. You are the ultimate translator as you already speak Mojo and that's really what we're talking about here!

I love your words, "And it was- at once- completely irreverent and divinely holy." That sums up Mastery so perfectly.

So many of us know that disconnection of looking for our power/source/connection/mojo outside of us. By now we have heard that's it lies within us but it's so much easier (and a lot more fun!) to access it within community. I know not every woman can do or wants to do the course but every woman can read the book and get a little taste of the work through your post. How divine! (We can also connect right here on Owning Pink too.)

It was a pleasure and an honor to experience this weekend with you. It was powerful to have your pink, healing, joyful, authentic presence in the room. I too was bouncing through the subway, the airport, the security line. And yes, people took notice. It creates that small town feeling out in the world. "IT" being the post-mastery glow/shining your pink light/seeing the world with magical (pussified) eyes.

As our dear mutual friend said this weekend, "The pleasure lock has found the key!" Yeah, baby! Thank you, Goddess! And more, please!

Oh Lissa I am so excited to

Oh Lissa I am so excited to read this and I can really feel what you are saying. I have Mama Gena's book, borrowed from a friend. My friend offered it to me before she even knew of my interest. Can you say Universe. I can't wait to hear see what you write about next weekend. Love to hear the conversation about Pussy and seeing so many women embrace it. Caren

Ah....thank you Sister

Ah....thank you Sister Goddess Joy! Yes, I my small group is trying to decide what to call our "pod." I'm pushing for the Pussy Posse! And you're definitely an honorary SG!

Ah!! What I wouldn't give to

Ah!! What I wouldn't give to have been there. It's going on my list of Big Dreams in 2011 (along with Burning Man and a walking tour around Ireland with David Whyte ... I mean, why not, right?) I can so picture you bopping through the JFK security line and know that there must be a glowing Pink aura around you now, visible to the naked eye of anyone. Even this piece has a rhythm and musical energy different from the rest of your writing. You've been seriously infused, dear one. The magic will no doubt trickle into the Pink community.

Pussy. Pussy. Pussy. (Sorry, just practicing saying it). So grateful that you found this gorgeous group of women and, by extension, made us all honorary sister goddesses - the Pink faction, maybe. =)

Love you! xoxoox

Oh thank you Sister Goddess

Oh thank you Sister Goddess Stephanie! And yes, here we are- linked arm and arm- embarking further into our feminine power. Wheee!!!!

Woo Hoo Sister Goddess

Woo Hoo Sister Goddess Lissa!

You hit the nail on the head or should I say the pussy... the energy that I felt this weekend you absolutely captured in your story! And I too felt that walking through Newark Airport... so much so that I checked in the ladies room to make sure I didn't have something smeared all over my face.

So glad you are taking this journey too. Can't wait to get my hands on your new book... WOO HOO... congrats on such an awesome endeavor! See you in April!
