What Is Love?

what is love

Question for Bernie:

I first picked up your book Love, Medicine & Miracles two and a half years ago at a counseling session with my husband who was a drinker. At the same time, my mother was fighting lung cancer. My husband turned around and hasn’t had a drink in months. Before she died, I was able to tell my mother that I loved her.

How To Deal With Fear

Question for Bernie:

I am writing to ask for some specific guidance in dealing with a lifelong problem of fear. I’m not talking about fear of bad guys or ghosts; I’m talking about the fear that something bad is going to happen. In fact, I am usually in a state of planning and anticipating that something bad is lurking right around the corner.

Understand Why You May Be Sick & Suffering

suffering

Many years ago my great grandfather told me of the persecution he experienced in Russia which led him to come to this country. He said the Cossacks would pursue him at night, when he was out teaching, and slash him with their sabers. One night he was on the hill above his village with his rabbi, the Baal Shem Tov. As they looked down they could see the Cossacks riding down and killing their Jewish brethren. They might have felt the same had they seen their loved ones being taken away to become slaves in a foreign land.

Doing Everything Right But You're Still Sick?

Question for Bernie:

My mother has been sick for many years on and off. It first started with breast cancer back when I was in high school. She beat it and was fine for about six years. Then for the past three years she has had different cancers on and off. It started with this weird lung cancer. . . I never quite understood, but apparently it was related to breast cancer (she doesn’t smoke). She actually hid it from my brother and me for a year, because she tried healing herself first. Ever since the first time she got cancer, she’s been working on herself, meditating, learning to love herself and her life, and even reading your books/listening to your CDs!

Consciousness and Life

Consciousness and Life
When I was four years old I was home in bed with one of my frequent ear infections. I took a toy telephone I was playing with and unscrewed the dial and put all the pieces in my mouth as I had seen carpenters do with nails which they then pulled out to use. The problem was that I aspirated the pieces and went into laryngospasm. I can still feel my intercostal muscles and diaphragm contracting forcefully, trying to get some air into my lungs, but nothing worked and I was unable to make any sounds to attract help. I had no sense of the time but suddenly realized I was not struggling anymore. I was now at the head of the bed watching myself dying.

Why Are You Living This Life?

life purpose

A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. . . but not necessarily in that order. ~ Jean Luc Goddard

Why are you living this life?

Have you thought about that question carefully? Can you name an action you have already taken or plan to take that will make your life complete? Will it bring you peace when you die because your purpose will have been fulfilled? Mortality is usually an unwelcome subject among families and friends. Many of us spend a lot of time and energy avoiding any acknowledgement that dying is a part of the life cycle, and few people are open about the odds of our lives ending in death being 100%. Those of us who do regularly think about death can be overwhelmed by worry which is a very destructive kind of imaging, but we can control how we react.

Measuring Spiritual Success

spiritual success

When considering how you can measure success in your spiritual life, the answer seems obvious. I meet many young men and women from well to do families whose lives are spiritual wrecks because their family defines success as accumulating more and more material things.

What Does Every Woman Want?

women want
I don’t know what I’ve been doing for the past 25 years. I must have had my head up my arse to have missed reading Dr. Bernie Siegel’sLove, Medicine & Miracles: Lessons Learned About Self-Healing From A Surgeon’s Experience With Exceptional Patients. But I’m reading it now as research for my next book The Prescripton: 5 Spiritual Steps To Healing Yourself From Illness, Trauma, Or Loss. And holy AWESOME SAUCE, Batman!

By page 3, I was madly in love with Dr. Bernie Siegel (who doesn’t wear a white coat and prefers to be called Bernie). By page 27, I was crying my eyes out. By page 61, I decided I must have read this book in a past life because so much of it mirrors what I have already written (so much so that some will surely think I’m knocking off Bernie). And by page 76, when I read, “The simple truth is, happy people generally don’t get sick. Ones attitude towards oneself is the single most important factor in healing or staying well,” I knew I had to meet this remarkable doctor.

So I wrote to him after my friend and mentor Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, author of Kitchen Table Wisdom and a long time friend of Bernie’s, gave me his email address.

Turns out he’s even more awesome than I imagined. Not only has he been guiding me in helping a patient who really needs love and support; he’s also a Yale surgeon who believes love heals, hugs his patients, employs the use of art therapy, and thinks we need to revolutionize the way we deliver health care. He’s also a Renaissance man - a poet, an artist, the author of many books, and a genuine, authentic man who really cares, as well as a role model for doctors like me and an inspiration for millions of patients around the world.

I could keep gushing, but instead, let me introduce you to my new friend and Owning Pink’s newest blogger - Dr. Bernie Siegel (cue wild applause!) Take it away, Bernie!

What Does Every Woman Want

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Many years ago a childhood friend of mine, due to a gambling addiction, got into a difficult situation involving some very significant debts. One day he shared with me that the organized crime group involved had threatened to break every bone in his body or worse if he did not pay up. He said when he told them he had no funds available and asked if he could repay the debt in some other way he was told that if he married the crime lord’s daughter they would let him off.
