How To Live Every Day Like It Might Be Your Last

Last Tuesday, I was sitting on my bed, working on my laptop, when I heard a helicopter just outside my window. Looking up, I saw the helicopter carrying a basket, as it flew to the rocky beach and craggy cliffs where I hike every day. Boats were zipping around the surf, and sirens were blaring, as rescue vehicles drove up a fire road onto the cliffside coastal trail.

Messages: Communication After Death

"Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe." -- Saint Augustine

I have just started to read the book, MESSAGES: Signs, Visits, and Premonitions from Loved Ones Lost on 9/11 by Bonnie McEneaney. It is a powerful testimony to the many ways that our loved ones communicate with us after their death. The ways in which they reach out are different and varied -- but the result is a peace and knowing that those we love continue to be very much a part of our lives.

Waiting and Becoming... Easier Said Than Done!

Something has come over me. For months now I have been telling myself it will pass, but after this long, I cannot keep saying it. It would be a lie if I continued to act as though this space I am in is not part of who I am. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t be in it. Last week I wrote myself out of this space and referred to it as “the funk.” A day later I felt fine. However, I had an eerie sensation the funk would soon return.

Chi Whiz! What Am I Doing With My Energy?

Each of us has life force energy (Chi), which like the parable of the gold talents can be saved (buried), frivolously spent (gambled away) or invested. Remember in the parable, the first of three sons buried his gold talents and was chided by the father because he did nothing with the gifts he was given. The second son gambled away his talents and was rebuked for frittering away the sacred gifts. And the third son who invested his talents was rewarded not only with a greater store of gold, but the appreciation and respect of his father.

The Balance of Giving (AND Receiving)

woman happily receiving gift

I once knew this guy. He was considered to be -- and was in my own experience -- very generous. He would easily give of his time and business expertise in order to help anyone, friend or stranger. It even jazzed him up to talk about how much he loved to give. He became animated and emotional when he spoke about how great it felt to serve and be in community in this way.

The Mysterious Cycle of Gratitude

Have you ever noticed how a high level of gratitude reinforces the very thing you are thankful for? In this shifting economy it is easy to be thankful for an income, the roof over your four supportive walls, a job that feeds AND inspires you, happy children, and good health. This alone can fill your meditative moments with buckets of gratitude. But what happens when you find heartfelt gratitude for something immeasurable? If a strong dose of inspiration springs into your life, and your consciousness of it triggers gratitude, will this spiral into greater amounts of inspiration?

God Talk: The Language of Love

Lady in the woods with arms wide to the filtered light

I just want to talk about God, so why do negatives immediately come to mind? “No judgment.” “No strict dogma." In my attempt to describe All That Is, my first reaction is to contract. But behind that very Human-ness, is my need to understand infinite, unconditional compassion and love.

Understanding Our Dreams

Most of my dreams are elusive. I make every effort to remember them each morning, but I have little success. Fragments pop into my mind throughout my day reminding me that my dreams are present in some part of my consciousness.

Independence Day AHA: Living the Questions

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.  Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them.  And the point is to live everything.  Live the questions." - Rainer Maria Rike

Today, on Independence Day, I am speaking in front of the congregation at my Unity Church. It will be my first ever public-speaking engagement. I had what I considered a huge spiritual aha about two months ago and decided to make that the theme of my talk. The fact that I am presenting it on the 4th of July is even more appropriate because for me, the experience has been a ticket to freedom.
