They Tell Us To Lose Weight & Shove Us Out The Door

body image

As a body image coach and mentor, the subject of weight is pretty common among my students–some are overweight, some are underweight, and some are struggling with their weight – even if it’s perfect (as far as the numbers are concerned).  There’s an irony, huh? That there could be a “perfect” weight anywhere in our society. The truth is that we are fed lies upon lies about “perfect” body image and perfect weight, and we eat them and STARVE on the inside while growing larger and larger on the outside.

Gratitude Is The New Black

gratitude

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, creates a vision for tomorrow.” – Melody Beattie

For some of us, having a happy holiday season feels daunting or even close to impossible. It seems that no matter how hard we work to insulate ourselves against our issues around home and family, the tunnel from Thanksgiving to New Years is a minefield loaded with hidden traps, double agents and too many opportunities to self-destruct or rip open old wounds and old injuries.

3 Steps To A Healthy Body Image

Weight loss by tape measure

What’s more painful than chronic physical pain?

The pain that lives inside of us, that’s what. Can you imagine being 100 pounds overweight and living with all of the agony that goes along with that? The inability to buy a dress or the fear that goes with flying on an airplane? Now, can you imagine losing that weight and still coming up short? Still feeling deep inside that you are not good enough? Never believing for more than a few moments at a time, that you are beautiful and valuable?

Eating Disorders: If Not Now, When?

If not now, when?

I was a compulsive eater out of my mother’s womb. The youngest of eight children in an abusive home, and I used food to feel safe. I overate every day, hated myself for it, and yet could not stop.

Self-Care On The Road

self-care on the road

Melbourne, Australia has a lot of things going for it – beautiful scenery, warm people, crazy accents. But for my partner, Kathleen, one draw eclipsed all others – Roger Federer.

Kathleen feels about tennis the way other people feel about motorcycles or wine  – it is a way of life for her. And Roger, as we call him, is the crown jewel of that passion. So when Kathleen came to me in December and pled her case (“Roger might retire soon! This may be my last chance to see him play!”), I couldn’t say no. So we packed up, hopped an 18-hour flight, and staked out Roger’s favorite restaurants when we weren’t watching him on the court.

But for all the amazing things Melbourne has going for it, our two-week excursion had the potential to derail the self-care routine I’ve been dedicated to for years.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH: How Sitting Makes Us Happier and Healthier

sitting healthy meditate

So many of my Body Image Mastery students tell me how much easier everything would be with another two hours in a day – heck, another 15 minutes would come in handy. Our lives are filled to the brim, and the idea of sacrificing any amount of time to sit and just breathe is unimaginable. And yet this is exactly what I tell them to do. Wouldn’t you if sitting and breathing could make the rest of your life calmer, fuller, more joyful?

That’s where meditation comes in. Now, I know some of you Pinkies may see the “M” word and think, “Oh no, this post is not for me. That’s too out there.” But I implore you not to stop reading! I know that the word “meditation” can set off the woo-woo alarm (to borrow a phrase from the incomparable Lauren Nagel). It certainly did for me when I first heard about meditation.

Owning Our Thoughts: Let’s Leave Judgment to the Courts

Owning Judgment Thoughts

Judgment: the dictionary defines it as “the ability to . . . make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, esp. in matters affecting action; good sense.” But for many of us, judgment is anything but objective and wise. It’s instead about anger or fear: will my friends judge me for this? Will my partner or mother? Am I judging myself for my thoughts and actions? The word ‘judgment’ frequently carries deeply negative connotations.

And yet humans are by nature judgmental! Our powers of logic and discernment are what got us to where we are, evolutionarily speaking. But the self-doubt and hatred associated with our social judgment – that’s not serving any purpose except to pit us again each other and ourselves.

Owning EXERCISE (It’s the New Vitamin C!)

Exercise Preventative Medicine

The high of the holiday season is over, and we’ve now moved into a far less festive time of year – cold and flu season. But we’re fighting disease with all we got – we take preventative action. We wash our hands often, drink orange juice, take immunity supplements, and get flu shots.

Shouldn’t we do the same for our general health?
