Retreat Into Kripalu - How To Get Your Mojo On

Kripalu Mojo

Recently, Owning Pink Bloggers Dana Theus and Laurie Erdman trekked to Kripalu where they participated in a weekend writing program led by Nancy Slonim Aronie, and then stayed a few extra days for “retreat and renewal.” For those of you who haven’t been to Kripalu (where Lissa is leading a workshop next month - details below!), we asked them to share their experience.

The Official Deets

Let’s start with the official details. The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health (as it is officially known) is located in the Berkshire mountains of Western Massachusetts. Suffice to say the setting is beautiful even when it is snowing and raining (which it was when we were there, but which it won’t be when Lissa is!). The physical location is a former Jesuit monastery turned ashram, turned 501(c)(3) educational institution over 30 years ago. Each year it hosts numerous programs on “wellness, Ayurveda, nutrition, fitness, personal growth, relationships, meditation, spiritual practice, professional training, and much more.” In addition to its programs, you can stay for retreat and renewal, taking advantage of the grounds, the amazing food, thrice daily yoga and other classes taught by staff, as well as the weekly Monday night drum circle.

What I Learned From Six Inch Stripper Shoes

learned stripper shoes

I woke up to this sentence in my inbox last Tuesday:

Next week we will dance in the stripper shoes if you are ready to go there.

No, I haven’t ditched my day job—a few weeks ago I embarked upon my S Factor journey, slipping into a dark dance studio with seven other women to discover our “erotic creatures” under the glow of the red light (check out my first post here). A few classes in and we’re upping our game—literally. About six inches or so.

Roundtable: Are Chinese Mothers Superior?

chinese Mother Superior

We have not been able to stop talking about The Wall Street Journal essay by Amy Chua, Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior -- an excerpt from her recently published book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (Penguin Press 2011). "Can a regimen of no playdates, no TV, no computer games and hours of music practice create happy kids? And what happens when they fight back?" Check out Suzzane's fabulous post on the topic as well, and join the conversation!

Lissa -- At what price?

When I read Amy Chua’s article, my blood started to boil. Now given, my five year-old daughter goes to a Waldorf school, which is arguably the diametrically opposed opposite of growing up with a Chinese mother, so I'm probably not her target audience. Kids in my daughter's school are nurtured, hugged, coddled even. But they also love school and work hard to earn the faith, love and trust they are given unconditionally by their teachers and their parents. Will the Waldorf method work for my child? I don't know. I know a lot of Western kids grow up entitled, spoiled, lazy, fat, and unfocused. And I know Chinese kids tend to be better at math, science, and music. But at what price?

How To Live Like You’re On Vacation - Everyday

everyday vacation

Ah, this month is a doozy isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong – I love my job as your ever-loyal editor in pink, but there’s something about these first weeks in January that kills. It’s like yesterday was all a-flutter with holiday lights and celebratory cheer and today is just… well shit, we’re just smack dab in the heart of winter. Getting “back to the grind” post holi-daze can feel particularly daunting when you’ve had some time away – which, I am grateful to say, I did. On an island. In Belize. Yep, I’m That Girl. The one who returns to the office in January abnormally (annoyingly) tan and chipper? Hi there. I think there’s still sand in my shoes.

But I’ve come to realize – as my boyfriend “helpfully” takes down the Christmas tree and I weep into my latté – that we don’t have to relinquish those delicious feelings of vacation just yet. In fact (drumroll), I’m quite dedicated to the idea of manifesting the get-away vibes as a integral part of my daily lifestyle (cymbal crash! Ooh! Aah!)! Not convinced? Read on.

Confession: I’m Addicted To Gratitude

gratitude

I’ve always been a please and thank you kinda gal. I’ll interrupt the dinner conversation to genuinely thank the busser for refilling my water glass, and make eye contact when expressing gratitude that a stranger held the elevator for me. But I’ve never been one to truly examine what I’m grateful for in my, you know, life. In fact, I kind of have an upchuck reaction when I hear things like “gratitude journal” or “gratitude practice” – it puts the woo in woo-woo, and the rebellious teenager in me wants to roll my eyes and scoff. Psh, whatevs.

But I come to you today a fully blown convert. A changed woman. Two woos just aren’t enough – my life calls for woo cubed. And what better week than that of Thanksgiving to finally own this facet of my life?

My name is Lauren Nagel, and I’m a gratitude-a-holic.

Roundtable - How Do You Connect With Your Inner Child?

Lissa cartwheel

Welcome to the Owning Pink Roundtable, where we pose the same question to several of our bloggers and let 'em have at it. This week, following the festivities of Halloween, we went to the OP staff to find out how they connect with their inner child. Whoopie cushions, anyone? Enjoy!

Halloween celebrations (and the consequent sugar overload) are enough to make anyone dress up, get silly, and have a little fun. But how do you get in touch with your inner child on a daily basis? Do you make time for playtime?

What Is Your Writing Ritual? 10 Tips On Connecting With Your Creative Process

Finished products sure do get a lot of attention, right? We’re not usually attending art shows of half-completed paintings or reading published work that stops midsentence. We don’t hear songs on the radio that trail off after the first verse, the vocalist pausing to say, “There’s going to be a rockin’ chorus here!” Finished products are fabulous and have an energy all their own – but man, do I dig the process. I absolutely love talking to artists about the journey – how they do what they do. That sculpture is beautiful, but how the heck did you get to that from a clump of clay?
