Merely Human or Potentially Perfect: Owning the Divinity Within

Owning Divinity
Spiritualism

I know to an extent, I've shared my beliefs about God here on Owning Pink. If you've missed those posts from me in the past, let me just warn you I'm about to bust out the "spiritualism." People from every religion speak about TRUTH. When it comes down to it though, in order for it to be true, don't we all have to believe it (or at least feel that it could be true)? What I am going to discuss in this post is something I think can be found somewhere in the writings of every religious organization. Not everyone will chose to embrace it, but I'd bet if they were open to it, they'd find confirmation of it very easily...

The Search for the Perfect Panties

Comfort over Beauty

In this new year of owning and embracing all of me, I must admit when it comes down to it, I’m going to choose comfort over beauty 99% of the time. I can look in my closet right now and see short skirts and high heel shoes I purchased in an attempt to look sexy, only to wear them once and never again. I cringe just looking at women in spiked heels and skinny jeans. Somehow I just can’t bring myself to compromise the free and satisfying feeling of loose clothing and flip-flops.

Needless to say, and much to my husband’s dismay, my underwear drawer doesn’t hold many contents from the Victoria's Secret collection. I have spent a great many years searching for the perfect pair of panties, amidst the inner tug between wanting to feel comfortable and sexy.

Resolving to Lose Weight....Again!

New Year, New Me (or Real Me, Rather)

As the New Year approaches, I can’t help but think that I am not the embodiment of who I truly feel I am. Every year I make the same resolution -- to lose weight. Some years it works, but over time the weight always comes back. This year the change must go deeper, it must be a spiritual journey towards embracing my entire self-the shadows and the light. This year I will own my health!

Find Affirmation in Groups!

We all want a special place

As infants and toddlers we begin to learn the ways in which we can get recognized. In some cases it’s cooing and smiling, in other cases it’s crying and screaming. We watch the reactions of those around us and we act accordingly so we can have our own valued role in this exclusive group known as family.

Bring Back the Bush!

Should I Shave My Pubic Hair?

When I was on tour with Lissa Rankin, a question came up at our first college chat event -- a question about pubic hair. Lissa had just explained that not all STDs are prevented with condom use. Pubic lice is one of those. A young woman then asked if she should just shave all of her pubic hair in order to avoid exposure.

I am sure there had to have been a time when shaving (or waxing) your pubic hair was akin to shaving you head. When I was a little girl in the early '80s "the bush" was symbolic of this incredible, mysterious world of womanhood that I'd one day enter. Getting to sneak a peak at this part of a woman's body -- whether in an R-rated movie or the Playboy magazines under my friend's brother's bed -- absolutely fascinated me. I thought "the bush" was beautiful and I couldn't wait to have one.

Why Tuesday Broke My "Liberal" Heart

Last Tuesday night I watched the election results and basically felt as if I had been stabbed in the gut. For the first time I understood that fear -- you know, the fear that has been swimming through our ultra-conservative population across the country since Obama was elected in 2008 -- that the country is about to see some very, very dark days. I sat there with this ache in my belly wondering how long before we bleed out. I used to think that that fear was absurd and irrational, but since the shoe is on the other foot now, I can finally understand.

Gateway Drug or Medicinal Aid? CA's Proposition 19

Legalize It?

I live on the East Coast in a part of the country that I doubt would even consider legalizing marijuana. But I’ve heard and read stories like this one often enough to know it is on the ballot in California come November (next week!). I am a rule follower by nature. The times in my life where I dared to break the rules set up by the establishment, I suffered from extreme paranoia. I’m even nervous about writing on the topic of legalizing marijuana. I mean, seriously, what will people think of me for saying how I feel about it?

Just One Spin? Thoughts On Reincarnation

Learning to walk

When our children are learning to walk they take slow and unsteady steps. They fall down, again and again. We watch their journey to mobility and know that eventually they will reach success. None of us ever expect them to get it right on the first try. We, as parents, would never say to them after their first fall, "That’s it, you’re done, no walking for you!"
