Beat Procrastination With Passion

Sylvia van Bruggen's picture

Every single person needs to have procrastinating time. Time where you just idle by and let life be life. To just not do anything and state that proudly when someone asks: "Whatcher doin?" Nothing is wrong with that. It's just the way for the body and mind to reset themselves, to get you back into a state of mind your work or your family requires.

In a way procrastination is the perfect way to regain your mojo, or recharge your inner battery after a busy time at work, or when healing from an illness.

It becomes a problem when procrastination becomes common. Each night you go to bed not knowing exactly what you did in the past day, and you feel unfulfilled, and empty inside. When you look for something to do you move sluggishly, listlessly through the tasks at hand and wonder what the hell you should pick up.

The big question

How do you regain your mojo, and keep yourself from losing sight of the unique spark that makes you invaluable to the world?

This question only has one true answer: passion.

Live, breathe, feel, enjoy, sparkle with the certainty that you have found what you have been born to do.

A mission of discovery

There are many ways to discover your passion, I find that asking yourself questions works when you are overwhelmed. Find some solitude and let these questions answer themselves from within.

  • What did you dream of doing as a child?
  • What were your goals then?
  • What did you need to do in order to feel the most zeal?
  • What made you insecure?
  • What effect does that insecurity have on your life today?
  • What do you envy in others?
  • What would you love to create?
  • What gives you energy?
  • What moves you to tears?
  • What do you want to give the earth in your lifetime?
  • Where do you find inspiration?
  • Which person do you most long to switch places with, and why?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

When you answer these questions and others that pop up, you will see a common thread emerge. A small hint of what your true passion might be.

Start living your passion

When you have found what your true passion is, start living it. Is it painting? Get the tools and paint each day. Is it writing? Show up at your keyboard every single day and write. Is it inspiring others to follow their dreams? Spread the word through talks with individuals, write a speech that you can give for local groups.

Be creative. True passion loves creativity, it allows for that inner spark to shine through even further. My passion is writing, and every time I sit down to write something, whether it's an email or a story or a post like this one, I can feel my body come to life. And every time I sit down to paint, I know it stills my mind enough so that I can write afterwards. Everything I do is in service to my passion.

Passion and resistance

True passions always have one thing in common: the more it is your passion, the more resistance you will find. Inside you: (I would be crazy if I did that, I am not worthy, people would judge me) and outside you: ( are you nuts? what are you thinking? have you considered this? Why do you think you can do that? Youre bonkers!! )

These are all tests of your conviction and your strength in living this passion. Maybe you have had experiences like this before and never made the jump into following your dreams.

Just do it, though, own your pink and live your true dreams. You are worth going to bed each night with a completely fulfilled sense of being.

Blessings,

Sylvia

Thank you Lissa!

I will definitely add this book to my reading list.

In my opinion you HAVE to fall in order to learn how to stand up with grace, and then walk on with such amazing joy and vigor.

Finding your passion

I just read this fabulous book Sylvia- Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life- and it's all about this- tapping into your passion and listening to what comes up. And yes, there is often a lot of resistance to following your passion. As long as you're not following it, you can't fail. Putting yourself out there means risk- and the potential of failing. But to me, if you're not failing in life, you're not living enough. You can't achieve your dreams if you don't take the first step.
