I’m going to admit to being more “woo-woo” than I’ve ever admitted to anyone outside of my close circle of friends. I was raised in a very strict religious environment that was full of rules about the way the world is. Anything outside of these rules was condemned. I know the people who preached the condemnation mostly did so out of concern for our eternal souls. Truly believing that we would burn for eternity in hell fire, they did everything they could to prevent that fate. What it did for me was instill a fear of anything that didn’t fit in their paradigm.
And, my sister and I experienced many things that didn’t fit into the paradigm. My sister sees ghosts. They don’t speak to her or try to interact in any way. But, I know she sees them. For years I tried to explain away what she saw (and continues to see), or I tried to just ignore it. But, after all of the events in the past few years of my life, I’ve become more open to non-traditional and seemingly, “non-logical” experiences and beliefs. I decided to research what my sister reports seeing and read several books about interactions with the spirit world.
In my research, I happened to read an article about spirit guides. The author suggested asking our spirit guides to reveal themselves to us in our dreams. So, I made the request. That night, I had normal dreams. Nothing seemed even remotely like a spirit guide. I got up the next morning, a little disappointed, and opened my living room curtains.
Immediately, cardinals started flying around. They were chirping and flying from my rooftop to the trees to my porch. They were moving so much that I couldn’t count them but I’d say there was a least a dozen of them. My cat ran to the window and was going crazy! The performance lasted for a good five minutes before it stopped.
And, to the internet I went. I looked up “symbolic meaning of cardinals” and was introduced to the world of animal guides. Cardinals specifically represent “renewed vitality through recognizing self-importance” (see Animal Speak by Ted Andrews). As I researched this further, I remembered that a few weeks prior a cardinal had landed just a few feet in front of me, made eye contact, said, “tweet” and flown away. I also recalled similar instances from childhood that I had dismissed out of fear. This time, I decided to approach the experience with an open mind and observe nature more closely to see what she may be trying to communicate with me.
A few days later, on the way to work, I saw a very large crow land on top of a tombstone. I knew that probably wasn’t a good omen! Within minutes, I received a text message from a coworker telling me that she had just been laid off. 30% of us were laid off that day. Another day, while pondering how “real” all of this is, a crow flew in front of my car. Out loud I said, “there is no way that every bird I see has symbolic meaning!” I looked at the license plate in front of me and I kid you not, the license plate read “KAW.” I’ve later learned that crows generally mean “there is magic all around.” I have many more stories like this, involving feathers, red-tailed hawks and a whole variety of animals. I even began seeing very detailed images in the clouds.
I felt like I’d tapped into an unknown world. I was still skeptical but the New Age aisle in the bookstore became my home away from home. I came across a book by Sherrie Dillard called Discover Your Psychic Type: Developing and Using Your Natural Intuition. The birds and the images in the clouds, all fell under a particular type of intuitive that Ms. Dillard calls “physical intuitive.” She writes, “Physical intuitive are able to experience what is holy, good and of truth through their connection with the natural world.” Other intuitive types that she discusses are mental, emotional, and spiritual. I realized that I had varying elements of each.
What I’ve learned from this is that we are all connected to spirit in myriad ways. Some may connect with spirits the same way my sister does. (The more I talk to people about this, the more common I realize this is. People just feel uncomfortable admitting it to others.) Some may be highly empathic; others are great at discerning patterns. I urge everyone to keep an open mind and an open heart and discover the world of spirit in a way that you may not have previously thought possible.
(Oh, and a spirit guide did appear to me in a dream, about a month after that initial request. I saw a giant man, sitting in front of a mirror, and he told me that he came from a different place. My great-grandmother [who died in the late 90s], walked through the room, and somehow, I knew this man was her husband, even though he died in the 1950s. The next morning, I called my sister, who has all the genealogy of the family, and asked about our great grandfather. I found out that he and I share the same birthday!)
How do you connect with spirit? Please share your experiences and the lessons you’ve learned!

a robin redbreast
By Jessica (not verified) on Friday, 09/17/2010 at 1:20 AMDear Jennifer, a great post and a brave one to write!
A few days ago I was in the Botanical Garen in Dublin and a robin came really close to me, singing and looking at me. One moment he sat next to my bench on the floor! I have been able to relax enough lately to hear what animals say with my mind, but usually I want "proof" for myself by putting it in words what they say. Looking at this little bird I got tears in my eyes (which is a sign of connection for me) and started looking for the meaning and he would not do it :). He only said 'no words' and left me to FEEL what it was about and then the tears started flowing even harder. I felt so happy and I still can't put any language to it, hehe. The start-up text for my phone I changed into 'no words' to remind me that feeling my emotions is enough, too.
When I left the little side garden to continue I wanted to eloquently thank him and yup, he gently reminded me again... 20 grammes, and so much wisdom!
Much magic for you all,
Jessica
"no words"
By Jennifer Shelton on Friday, 09/17/2010 at 2:24 AMWhat a wonderful story, Jessica! I checked Ted Andrews' book, Animal Speak, and he says the robin represents "spread of new growth" and "the creative life force." I also like to ask animals if they have a message for me. Once, I was looking at an outdoor sculpture, and was surprised to see a lizard looking back at me. Mentally, I asked, "do you have anything to say to me?" I heard, "leave me alone." I don't know why but I thought that was very amusing! And, I moved on to the next statue!
Blessings,
That's a clear answer ;-)!
By Jessica (not verified) on Friday, 09/17/2010 at 4:18 AMI would have walked on too, haha! Some time ago I sat down in my garden and by doing so crashed into a spider's web. I apologized and said I hadn't seen him, to which he replied that as that ís the whole point of the web he could not be too upset about it...okay :). Only the lower third was missing and when I then asked if he would fix it or start a new one, this cheeky fellow mentally winked and said "that's for me to know and for you to find out, isn't it?". He stayed in the middle for a while and then weaved a thread through the bottom rigs, pulled it tight at the corner and voilá, it could do the job for a little longer.
Lately I've noticed that although I communicate with people's companions every now and then if I'm asked, the contact with Nature in general, trees, spiders, birds and all else can really knock me off my feet!
Human ghosts I haven't been very close to so far... I'm a bit more cautious with that but there is really no need, as animals that have passed on are exactly the same in connection and we all move about freely anyway. I'll get where I need to in my own sweet time!
Thank you for this blogstory!
Thanks
By Scott Sheperd (not verified) on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 1:03 PMThank you so much for sharing your story. It just made me realize how much I have lost touch with all of these avenues. I have to tell you, the picture of the cardinal just grabbed me. Even before I read the post I couldn't get away from that picture. Right to my core. Amazing.
cardinal
By Jennifer Shelton on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 1:52 PMIsn't that picture amazing?! Thanks everyone for all the support on this article. I was really nervous about it! Now, I'm off to refill my bird feeders!

Jennifer, thank you so much.
By Kasey (not verified) on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 10:58 AMJennifer, thank you so much. Your posts always seem to resonate quite deeply with me. And your courage to share these things helps inspire a deeper level of openness in me.
I am definitely an emotional intuitive, but would like to learn how to understand it better. As a kid, when I picked up negative energy or feelings, I always assumed it was about me (why else would I be feeling it?). Feeling the energy of everyone in the room often felt more like a burden than a gift. But, I am trying to open to it more, now that I am more grounded.
Somewhat like your sister, I've known the presence of ghosts. I don't see them, but I feel them. One used to play tricks with me by turning on and off the light switch. I could watch the switch go up and down. My roommates were all horrified, all recognized it only did it when I was around, and all made me say good-bye to it when I moved on because they said they could tell it needed closure (they were actually really sincere about this).
I shared my hummingbird story above. This year seems to be about energy generally. I have noticed that when I am feeling an intense negative emotion, things go haywire around me. I flipped over in a chair (it went over the top of my head) a couple of months ago, the baby monitor will beep non-stop, the phone shuts off. It's a bit freaky, to be honest. But, I am trying to be open to it. I guess we don't know our own power until it's reflected back.
Thank you again so much.
thank you!
By Jennifer Shelton on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 11:26 AMThank you so much for your comment and for sharing your experiences, which do sound very much like my sister's. Have you read much about "aura cleansing"? I've suggested it to my sister since she picks up so much energy from others. It can be just as simple as passing a feather around your body. You can Google and find a lot of information on it. Also, maybe a centering meditation? I like to put pictures of my totems around my house and on my computer as well, for inspiration. I say make that hummingbird your desktop background! To your "tireless joy"!

Thank You God for the Cardinals
By Monica Wilcox on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 10:06 AMLove your honesty Jennifer! And aren't you glad to be out of the paradigm of your youth. I find once you step out of the box the world becomes so much more mystical and suddenly you're finding The Almighty outside your window.
I've become so used to animals as a spiritual message in my life I get frustrated when I come across an animal in an unusual way and don't have my Animal Speak book handy.
Have you started dreaming about animals yet? I've had dreams of animals chasing me all my life and FINALLY figured out this last year that I don't need to be afraid of being ran over by a buffalo (which they never did) but need to consider the spiritual significance of this animal who is trying to get my attention. It's completely changed my dreams from fear to fascination. This also provides me a chance to get the message of that animal when I live in an area that doesn't have them; not a lot of bison hanging around my bedroom window. :)
Another great post!!

Animal Speak withdrawal
By Jennifer Shelton on Friday, 08/20/2010 at 11:18 AMMonica, I know what you mean about getting frustrated when your Animal Speak book isn't handy! Last Christmas I was traveling and saw all kinds of interesting animals. I didn't have my book and I didn't have my computer. Then, I remembered that my Kindle could access the internet. So, I was doing crude Google searches on my Kindle! I'm getting better and better at figuring out the message without a handbook, though.
Thank you for sharing your story. You're the first person I've known to have a buffalo totem!

By Tracy (not verified) on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 12:53 PMHere's my latest "red-tail hawk" story. We had a beautiful red-tail hawk hanging about the house, calling very loudly and flying from tree to tree. It drove the dogs nuts! This went on for a good week. Rationally I figured it could be smelling the rabbits in the Bunny Shack or it was looking for a mate. I, of course, was being stubborn. I knew it was telling me to look at a situation from a higher perspective. I didn't want to. After the strange behavior didn't let up, I looked it up in Ted Andrew's book and in Jamie Sams "Medicine Cards".
Once I took a perspective step back or pulled my head out of the trees so I could see the forest, I saw the bigger picture and felt better. The anger I was holding onto melted away. Amazingly, the next day, the hawk was gone and I haven't seen hide nor feather of it since then.
In my life, my intuition or inner being always guides me and uses a variety of methods to get my attention. It certainly makes life magical and interesting!
woo woo sister!
By Jennifer Shelton on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 2:34 PMThanks for that great story! I once had a red-tailed hawk fly straight at the window where I was working! I screamed and jumped away but at the time, knew nothing about totems. I think the hawks have been trying to send me messages for years. Thank goodness I finally opened my eyes!
Blessings,
Great Post
By Kimberly Wencl on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 7:19 AMGreat post Jennifer! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us.
I also echo Megan's sentiments - once you open up to a connection with the Universe, the more it opens up to you and signs and messages are everywhere!
The beautiful thing is that everyone's intuition speaks to them in their own unique way.
My sense is that we are really moving into a new age of AWAKENING and those of us who have begun to embrace our intuition are called to share our stories and experiences with the world. By doing this, we give others food for thought and when something happens to them, instead of discounting it, they just may give it more thought and realize it is their own intuition speaking to them.
Everyone has the gift of intuition - and we also have the freedom to choose to use or to ignore it.
My hope is that woo-woo will soon be replaced with acceptance and unconditional love.
Our calling

I just wrote this exact same thing (but not as eloquently) to a friend, not even an hour ago! Yes, there is an awakening (I know many call it the Divine Feminine) and we are here to help people to recognize and acknowledge their own spirituality. It's been here all along, we've just been ignoring it. I'm proud to be called with you, Kimberly!

By Megan Monique Harner on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 6:39 AMI SO loved this post and tried to comment yesterday when I read it, but internet went down before I could hit "submit." I am writing that book down to purchase it. I feel I have always been intuitive and the more I pay attention to what shows up, the more powerful it becomes. I love hearing stories of how others embrace their intuition. Thank you for writing this!
Thank you, Monique
By Jennifer Shelton on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 7:50 AM...for all you do and for inspiring others with your own stories of intuition! The author of the book is local to me, and I have an appointment with her in October. I'm so excited!

By Tracie (not verified) on Thursday, 08/19/2010 at 5:29 AMI must say I was very skeptical at first, but the more times we discussed it it started to make sense! Now I find it very fascinating though there are times I am still unsure. I will never get over the experience of that bird in our office window starring and talking to you for about what felt like 10-15 minutes? I had to see it to believe it! You and your sister have a gift and its wonderful to see you embracing yours. I know I have learned a lot!
Thanks, Jennifer. Great article!

Animal Speaks or Animals Speak
By Melanie Bates on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 1:37 PMLove this post Jennifer. I came into the study of Native American spirituality/Shamanism about ten or so years ago and studied it hard for about seven years. (Ted Andrews's book is one of my go-to books. My favorite book is Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Way of Animals - it's a combo book and sort of tarot deck and you find most of your spirit guide animals through a process of pulling these cards, though there are two that usually "come" to you. I've pulled these cards with many, many people and their animals always fit them to a tee. Almost creepy. My own animals have been guides and inspiration to me over the years and I see, very clearly, aspects of my personality in each one of them.) It was a very enlightening time in my life and I've never felt so connected, before, or since. I still "listen" to the animals I see and try to figure out what they're trying to teach me. Spiders always bring to mind my writing. (Leslee frogs signify cleansing and are amazing little reminders of clearing away life's gunk.) Thanks for writing this, I need a bit of a shove back to the spiritual, in whatever medium that might entail.
Proud to be woo-woo,
Melanie

Sensitivity to changes
By Ashley @ Nourishing the Soul (not verified) on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 1:36 PMI don't necessarily experience connection with what I would call spirits myself, but I am intrigued by those who say they do. I feel like my own spiritual connection lies in my empathy with others and being acutely sensitive to subtle changes in people. It's interesting because I don't notice these changes in my environment (you could switch all my furniture around and I wouldn't get it!) but I do with human beings. I think we all have unique gifts and senses.
emotional psychic
By Jennifer Shelton on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 2:41 PMAshley, in the book I mention above, what you experience is called "emotional intuition". The author's premise is that we are all intuitive, it just may not manifest in ways that we expect! Thanks for the comment!

Spiders?
By Leslee Horner on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 12:16 PMFor the experts on "Animal Speak", (I really must buy that book.) what is the symbolism behind spiders? I've found so many spiders in my house lately (including many baby spiders that had just hatched). At first I was annoyed, but then begin to think of them as a sign... So does anyone know the message (besides call the exterminator)?

spiders are a good one!
By Jennifer Shelton on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 12:25 PMAccording to Animal Speak, "The spider is the master weaver. To the Native Americans Grandmother Spider kept and taught the mysteries of the past and how they were affecting the future. Spider reminds us to awaken our own sensibilities to be more creative in live."
Also, an excellent online source for symbolism is www.whats-your-sign.com That's the first place I found when I started researching cardinals, and the website creator is now an "eAquaintance" of mine.
Blessings,
Thank you for coming out!
By Linda Eaves (not verified) on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 10:46 AMI watch and adore (insert air quotes here) fantasy, sci-fi, etc. There are many symbolic references on various shows. Now we know where these ideas came from! :) Real life.
When a hummingbird got up close and personal with me while sitting on my porch after a conference call, I knew I was on the right track for joy.
"In Native American culture, a hummingbird symbolizes timless joy and the Nectar of Life. It's a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible and will teach you how to find the miracle of joyful living from your own life circumstances.
They are really spectacular birds, and have a lot to teach a person about self discovery and healing."

Signs & Everyday Magic
By Simone (not verified) on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 9:40 AMLove it, Jennifer! I have a lot of crows (a symbol of change) around me in this neighborhood but they seem only to cross my path when i am thinking about something specific: an old friend's husband who I just knew was *ready* to die; a close relative's dementia; an outgrown job. And after the crows *walked* in front of me and made eye contact (all) all these things did show themselves the next day or very soon after, as moving in the direction they were meant to. I have to report that the crows' presence were like a comforting blanket, not a harbinger of doom and gloom. Nature was doing her thing and recognition led to acceptance which led to being a little more prepared but a lot more centered on each.
Yes, the Universe is breathing all around and through us all the time. Thanks for another goodie, Jenn.
crows
By Jennifer Shelton on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 12:54 PMSimone,
While you probably know that each animal can have a special meaning for the person who sees it, I've found crows to be especially "mutable." I have a red-tailed hawk as one of my totems (I get lots of red!), and crows are known to harass red-tailed hawks. Once, I was talking on the phone to a former co-worker who was trying to "help" me with my website. He was basically tearing it apart. I was looking out the window, and a RT Hawk landed on the branch. Right below it, landed a crow. They just sat there for a while, then the hawk flew away, and the crow followed. The annoying guy was the CROW! : D
Blessings,
Thanks again, Jennifer!
By Leslee Horner on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 5:31 AMSo I have been learning about all of this for about 3 years now. I love reading books by "psychics" and have spent time on and off trying to strengthen my own abilities. I shared the stuff I learned with my 3 best friends. They are not "woo-woo" but always listened with respect and interest. In October of 09 one of those friends passed away. I have had countless encounters with her spirit since then.
She loved frogs and I will tell you I have seen so many frogs and in the most unusual places. As I was driving home for her funeral I stopped at a rest stop. I came out of the bathroom and there in the middle of the paved pathway was a frog. In those days when I was home with her family, every time I hugged her mom I would get chills all over me. At one point Susie even asked me what it was and I answered "Amy!" I've had a few dreams about her and the last and most vivid one came after I was thinking about how much I wished I'd called her one more time before she passed. I could go on and on but the gist is, I know we are still connected.
Love and Light,

Blessings,
depends on how you define "woo-woo"
By Jennifer Shelton on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 4:46 AMTricia, I think what's "woo woo" for one is "normal" for another. Noticing our surroundings is the first step. Believing that birds are spirit guides, well, that ventures into "woo woo" for me, at least for the way I was raised!
(inside reference: remember the ugly duckling turned into a swan!)
Blessings,
Thanks for sharing sometimes
By Tricia Dycka (not verified) on Wednesday, 08/18/2010 at 2:57 AMThanks for sharing sometimes what happens in our lives we ignore and swear that it is just not there. You are very courageous to share. I have been seeing people that are not there. Not sure what it means I feel them then they are gone or see apparitions.
Also I get a lot of unusual birds in my life. So I have started paying attention to see what is the message.
Is it woo woo or just becoming more aware of our surroundings?
