Beloved. . . what?

It’s that time of year again. You either love Valentines Day or hate it, depending on whether you have a special someone in your life. This time around I discovered that special someone is myself. I have truly become my own beloved and the feeling this truth gives me is rich and serene. When I first heard that phrase - “become your own beloved” - I thought it sounded really new-agey and cheesy. Perhaps because I had yet to discover the richness in it and really own it. I’m on my way to having a deep knowing of it now.

You Can’t Quit Your Calling

Those of you who know my story know the on-again-off-again love affair I have had with medicine (as I wrote about here). Time and time again, I have tried to stray, quit my job, turned my back on the white coat. But again and again, it boils down to one thing. This is my calling, and you can quit your job, but you can’t quit your calling. It beckons like a siren song until you finally surrender to it.

But let it be that this woman in front of me – this intelligent, put together, gorgeous woman finds herself on her knees tonight, crawling, reaching, yearning, aching and tormented by something she cannot outrun.

When I was on antidepressants, my doctor told me a story that many doctors around the world tell their patients every day: “Taking antidepressants is like a diabetic taking insulin. The insulin helps the diabetic with their problem, so why stop taking it? If you have a chemical imbalance in your brain and the antidepressants are helping to regulate that, then often it doesn’t make sense to stop taking the medication.” The problem with this story is that in many cases, it’s false.
