Women have been erased from history for millennia. Countless courageous events led by women have gone unwritten or rewritten in the history books. Yet, in the age of feminism in modern times, we assume this doesn’t happen anymore, right?
Wrong.
According to CNN, the uber-Orthodox Jewish publication Di Tzeitung, a Hasidic newspaper based in Brooklyn, New York, whited out Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason, director of counterterrorism from the now iconic “Situation Room Photo” take while President Obama monitored the raid on bin Laden’s compound.
Just like that. Zip. Gone. The two women present no longer exist with a swipe of Photoshop.
Why would they do such a thing?Apparently, according to Rabbi Jason Miller, a blogger who picked up the story Sunday for The Jewish Week after another blogger wrote about it on Failed Messiah, Di Tzeitung does not include images of women in print “because it could be considered sexually suggestive.”
Not to diss Hillary (I’m admittedly in Team Hillary), but seriously, she’s just not looking super sexy with her furrowed brow and her hand over her mouth as she awaits the outcome of the risky mission. And Ms. Tomason -- well, you can barely see her, seated way back behind all the dudes.
Since when were women in politics just doing their job so scandalous?
I’m not a religious scholar, but rumor has it that Hasidic Jewish law mandates that men and women not be pictured in the same photos, since it’s just too darn sexy.
But laws also require truth -- and any manipulation of the truth (such as doctor a photo) is patently outlawed.
When faced with the choice between breaking one law or another, clearly manipulating the truth won out over showing powerful (but potentially racy) women, doing their thang in the situation room with dudes.
How is it that women are still at risk of being erased from history? It’s no wonder we as women are fearful about standing up for what we believe, speaking our truth, putting ourselves out there, and being seen for who we really are. After all, we’re still at risk of being erased, even when you’re a women who ran for the Presidency.
Not to be culturally insensitive -- and not to ignore the first amendment rights of this newspaper -- but how is this still happening in our culture? I’m frankly flabbergasted.
When will we as women be permitted to stand fully in our femininity without fearing that we’ll be censored for being too sexy?
Also appearing in the news this week was an article about SLUT WALK, an international series of protest marches spawned by a Toronto police officer's comment that women should avoid dressing like “sluts” to avoid getting raped. In these walks, women and men dressed in provocative or revealing outfits marched in protest to “slut-shaming.”
Why is this still happening? Are women really so alluring that men can’t help themselves? Are we really supposed to cut off our feminine power to avoid wreaking havoc for men?
I’m no man-hating feminist. In fact, I love men, and I consider myself a feminista. But when I read stories like these, I feel my blood boil.
I will not be silenced. I will not be censored. I will not go away. I will not downplay my femininity or sensuality just to make someone else more comfortable or keep myself safe from the violence of men. I will stand, not just for myself but for each and every woman out there who wants to be unapologetically who she is.
I am woman. Hear me roar.
What about you? What do you think? Are you outraged? Not surprised? Frustrated? Tell us what you think and let us hear you roar.
Grrrr…..

but we are talking about a different culture
By Brittany (not verified) on Friday, 05/27/2011 at 3:35 AMHey this is America, and here I can be seen and heard and it is not Taboo. But people do have the freedom of religion and this publication was for Orthodox Jewish people. It may seem backwards to you but that is their beliefs. This was not the New York Times for goodness sakes. Honestly to call them ignorant and unitelligent is disrespectful to them. Does it even occur to people that just because we maybe free thinkers, or more forward (in our eyes) that it does not mean that they are wrong? How hurtful and judgemental would it be to say that just because someone want to wait for marriage is and idiot. How rude would your think it was if someone more or less laughed at your beliefs. I don't find it sexy or anything, but I refuse to condem and froup of people for being conservative. This is why the rest of the world sees American's as arrogent and rude. We think that our way is the right way. Ladies when we start judging and insulting people for being different, we become the mean girls. Who was really actually hurt by this picture. Was someone beaten or punished. Was Mrs. Clinton erased from history. Seriously? This 2011, women are powerful, strong and are here to stay. We are not going backwards...unless we insist on being disrespectful to other people culture, just because they think differently. That's how wars are started ladies.
So women and men can't be in
By seldombites (not verified) on Tuesday, 05/10/2011 at 4:58 PMSo women and men can't be in the same picture, huh? Why not erase the men, then?
I'm not surprised, I'm not
By Michelle Medina (not verified) on Tuesday, 05/10/2011 at 4:05 PMI'm not surprised, I'm not even outraged. It just makes me more determined then ever to stand up and be counted/heard as you said. I WILL NOT go away! I WILL NOT lie down and die or JUST TAKE IT!! I will asert my power, I WILL flirt my ass off like Mama G encourages, I WILL teach my daughters *when I have them*, and all girls/women I come into contact with, to BE! To EXIST! And not hide under the societal rock as it were!! I also agree with Monica that eventually, the tides WILL turn in our favor, and this and other publications like it will be the ones to come off looking ignorant and uneducated.
Thank you for writing this Lissa!! For, being yourself!!!
Erasing women..and blaming
By Beth (not verified) on Tuesday, 05/10/2011 at 9:16 AMThis all goes back to blaming women for being sexual beings, for being themselves..and its easier for men to blame the woman for so much..
1. Being sexual (heaven forbid)
2. Being powerful (maybe more powerful than they are)
3. Being who they truly are.
It is suggested that women who dress like sluts ask for it.. goes back to the old laws that would poo poo a woman who reported a rape because she had a tight skirt or blouse on, there by she asked for it..
This culture of politicians, and those in authoritative positions wants to take society back to the "old days" where women are objects, women are property and have no control over themselves..We are sexual beings, we are not going away and right now WOMEN are asserting their ways more and more and I think...my opinion.. is that these men are afraid of women.. because we are finally coming into our own and it scares the SHIT outta them.. because their way of controlling the world, the area, the laws is going away. What saddens me is that these people are putting their own religious beliefs into writing laws.. not considering that because we can belief what we want in this country, we don't all think the same way...but they want us to because Its the way they want it to be and believe it should be.
Women were the fault in the Garden of Eden...sooo we are at fault and need to be contained at all times...
Just my humble Feminista opinion.

Find It Sad
By Monica Wilcox on Monday, 05/09/2011 at 4:13 PMI was seriously stumped when I saw this Lissa. It took a few minutes to really sink in that a culture would "erase" the truth of a historical event.
Surprisingly, I don't feel outraged. I feel pity. Here's a culture who still does not see the value of 51% of the world's population. They're the ones missing the opportunity to empower half of their population and all they could contribute to the evolution to the human race.
How are they helping their people by limiting and editing the fullness of history. In a global world they will come off looking ignorant and uneducated. As women take a larger and larger role in history, they will be the ones left with a diminished picture and will have inserted a huge division between themselves and the modern world.
What will they do when we elect a female President?
