Why Would I See a Naturopathic Doctor?

Dr. Lisa Brent is a naturopath at the Owning Pink Center.

"What is a naturopathic doctor?"
"How do you pronounce it?"
"Is it about, like, vitamins and stuff? "

These are some of the most frequent questions I get about my profession. Here, I hope to shed some light on how a naturopathic doctor might help you.

A naturopathic doctor is a specialist in natural medicine. Naturopathic (pronounced with a long or a short “a” - there is no consensus about this) medical training prepares doctors to treat the whole person and to address the root cause of disease using holistic, non-toxic modalities.

Naturopathic treatments are effective in treating a wide variety of conditions without the need for additional intervention. These treatments can also complement protocols used by conventionally trained physicians. And, yes, sometimes treatment protocols do include the use of vitamins, but naturopathic medical treatment encompasses so much more.

As an ND, I am trained to listen closely to what my patients tell me. An initial consultation will usually last more than one hour, during which time you will tell me as much as you possibly can about your health and other aspects of your life. I will ask you many questions, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions of me, as well.

It may also be necessary for me to perform a physical examination and/or order laboratory testing to accurately diagnose your condition. I will then give you my recommendations and, together, we will formulate a plan that works for your lifestyle, budget and comfort level. Typical treatment plans might include dietary recommendations, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, or bio-identical hormones.

The most valuable service I have to offer you is a treatment plan that is tailored specifically to you as an individual, and not just a routine approach to your condition. Wherever you are on the path toward better health, you will have my complete support and guidance. Together, we will make the journey toward a more vital, vibrant and balanced you.
