It’s nice to be back in California after a very exciting trip to my old college campus to do a keynote, my hometown to talk at a bookstore and the nation's capitol to do an in-house training.

This week we heard about yet another school shooting ( The U.S. is # 1 in that category) where the killer was described by other students and neighbors as a "fairly quiet and good kid who pretty much stuck to himself.” A student who hid in a classroom while the shooting occurred told reporters,” He was a nice guy who I never suspected could shoot anyone.” Yes there were reports of problems at home, but enough to make someone kill?

If you are troubled by depression, anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, memory loss, or cravings, your stressful thoughts and emotions may not be the main reason for your condition. In fact, your problems may not be in your head at all but in your neck, according to nurse practitioner and author Karilee Shames.
In an interview Shames told me that many of the “brain” problems women are challenged with today actually start with the thyroid. Shames explains, ”When your thyroid is too low or too high, your brain function becomes worse. The brain drives the mind, and the thyroid drives the brain.”

I am sure happy to see experts now waking up to how important it is to give our kids time to move throughout the day.

"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine."

[photo credit: photoxpress.com] We have all heard about the recent alarming stats on childhood obesity -- namely, that obesity rates among youngsters and adults in the United States have skyrocketed during the past decade. In 1994, 11.3 percent of children ages 6 to 11 and 10.5 percent of those 12 to 19 were obese. By 2008, those figures had risen to 19.6 for the younger kids and 18.1 for the older ones. The surge triggered escalating rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems among youngsters. Traditionally, these conditions had affected mostly adults.
