200236712-001

Happy weekend Pinkies. Joy here with another amateur pile of verse inspired by cleanse week, and the first rays of the sun we’ve seen in weeks in the bay area…

Rainy Season

Sometimes it does
Take that long
Endless torrents – cleansing tears
Half the world
Washed away
The other half
Growing in
Fungal
and Green
and New
Overwhelming that
Which lives
Vicious roaring flow
Viscous muddy motion
Threatening all it supports
Emptying heavens
and eyes
Washing out ducts
and gutters
And still it falls
and you wonder -
How could there be
So
Much
Water? And
Whence does it come? And
How much more
Can the ground hold? And
How have I not
Yet
Crumbled
Shattered
Broken
Imploded
How can I be this soggy and still
Alive?
And yet. I am.
And all
The better
For
The rain.

Owning Health: Love Your Body in 2010

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

love your bodyHiya Pinkies,
Here’s a post I wrote this week for CollegeCandy.com. It’s a message I wanted to share with you Pinkies as we head into a new year of renewed love and acceptance, not only for each other, but for our beautiful, vital, PINK selves. Enjoy, and here’s to your health!

*****

So, it’s 2010! What do you hope to achieve this year? What intentions did you set?  Many of us resolve to change our health- to lose weight, to quit smoking, to eat healthy, to cut back on booze, to join a gym. We get motivated. We make positive steps forward after the indulgences of the holidays. And then- bam. A few weeks later, it’s all over and we feel crappier than ever. Now, not only are we eating junk food, failing to exercise, and engaging in addictive behaviors, we also feel like losers because we can’t follow through on our resolutions.

This year, I invite you to OWN your health. What does that mean? That means loving yourself exactly how you are, flaws, warts, addictions, and all. Until you can love yourself, you’ll never effect lasting positive change in your life.  If you have bad habits, own them! Love your body just the way it is. Accept yourself, even if your health is not optimal. Learn to live in your skin and be present with what is. It’s the only path to sustainable change.

Once you learn to love yourself as you are, you may find that you naturally want to nurture yourself. When you’re coming from a place of loving acceptance, you may no longer feel like grabbing for that bag of potato chips. You’re more likely to feed a body you cherish fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. When you love yourself- curves, lumps and all- you may find that you naturally morph into your ideal body weight.  When you feel comfortable in your skin, you’ll relish moving your body- doing yoga, going for a hike in nature, jogging on the beach.

From this place of self-love and acceptance, radical change can happen. And you don’t need to resolve anything. You will want to do it. Your body will know what it needs to be healthy. But in case you’re searching for some inspiration, here are some thoughts.

5 Tips For Owning & Improving Your Health in 2010

  1. Buy a juicer and start making green juice. Do a detoxifying green-juice cleanse, or add green juice as a supplement to your diet. By nourishing your body, you allow it to heal whatever ails you. Even if you’re already very healthy, adding green juice to your body can change your life by improving energy, mood, immune function, and confidence.  You may even help your body fight cancer. Love your body enough to feed it well.
  2. Get moving. Walk 20 minutes each day. If that feels good, rev it up. Love yourself enough to get your body moving. The health benefits are endless.
  3. Be still. Most of us run around like chickens with our heads cut off, which leads to overwhelming levels of stress. Let your nervous system rest by spending some time in stillness. Try meditating, listening to guided imagery, sitting outside in nature, or taking a nap. Love your body enough to let it rest.
  4. Take a multi-vitamin and talk to your doctor about preventative supplements that might benefit you, such as fish oil and calcium. Love your body enough to optimize your preventative medicine.
  5. Listen to the wisdom of your body. Our bodies send us messages about what we can do to improve our health- and we tend to ignore what we don’t wish to hear. Love yourself enough to listen.

These are just some suggestions. But don’t let anyone else’s suggestions guide your path. Make a commitment to cherishing your beautiful, magnificent, sexy, healthy, radiant self. Then watch what happens. You may be surprised that 2010 is YOUR year- and all your dreams will come true.  I know you can do it. I see you- the completely lovable, gorgeous, sparkly PINK you- and I believe in you.

Wishing you health and peace in 2010,

Lissa

Mojo Monday: Owning What You Feel through Emotional Cleansing

"Emotional Healing" by Beth Budesheim (c) 2009

"Emotional Healing" by Beth Budesheim (c) 2008

Hello dear Pinkies,

Joy here. Happy Mojo Monday. I thought I would contribute to the Pink Posse Green Juice Cleanse this week with a few words about cleansing – the emotional kind.

A Surprising Moment

A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a friend (whom we’ll call Mary) who was describing a tense situation with another friend (Gladys). Mary felt victimized and done to by Gladys, though I well knew that Gladys didn’t intend for Mary to feel this way – that in fact Gladys was incapable of inflicting such feelings on anyone. It was just that Gladys herself had difficult things happening in her own life at the moment, and Mary was resorting to her tendency to be defensive and guarded. I knew too that Mary was carrying around some old guilt from her own past behavior toward Gladys.

I hated that both friends were hurting so much, and resented being in the middle of the situation, able to see both sides so clearly, and know that all that was needed to resolve the conflict was an honest conversation between them. I was frustrated because I knew they wouldn’t have that conversation, and that the situation would likely perpetuate.

Of course, I had no idea I felt any of this. After all, the situation had nothing to do with me, right? I was merely a witness to a feud between two people I cared about, but ultimately it was up to them to work it out.

Or so I thought. After the conversation with Mary, I went about my evening as usual, aware of an oddly intense energy swirling around my body but disregarding it. Then I sat down on my meditation cushion, a place where everything else in life becomes arrested, and all I can do is think and, more importantly, feel. Seconds after sitting down, it’s like the dial on that swirling background got turned way up, so that it became pulsing and loud. My yoga ball was next to me. Impulsively, I rolled it toward me, balled up my fist, and punched it. My hand rebounded off the pliable rubber, rose high, and landed again. Dissatisfied with the friendly, bouncy nature of the blows on the ball, I moved to the arm of the couch. Then the floor. I pounded and pounded. I snarled and yowled. Tears began to flow as the frustrated, angry, hateful energy flowed out of me and into the space around me. Then, tears still streaming, I sat back down on my cushion with whatever was left inside me. Turned out it was the same old monkey mind full of mundane thoughts – what to have for dinner, the movie I watched last night, my to-do list for the next day.

Twenty minutes later, I opened my eyes, a little surprised by the dried tear tracks on my cheeks. The issue that had previously been so present for me had been dissipated during my little tantrum, and I was back to feeling mellow and unencumbered. This was a far different feeling than acting chilled out while a storm raged just beneath the surface – a storm of which I wasn’t even aware until I sat for just a few minutes and checked in with myself.

Do you know what you’re feeling?

It’s rare that what we are feeling inside matches what we are doing on the outside. This is for a number of reasons. A big one is that many of us simply don’t know what we’re feeling – either physically or emotionally. Most in western culture actually aren’t even aware that anything exists below the neck. We are trained to use our brains, train our minds, think, rationalize, figure, and sort. More than that, we’re programmed not to act too “emotional,” especially in public. Tears make people uncomfortable. Saying what you really mean may rock the boat. Best to put on a happy/serious/brave/stoic/blank face and save making anyone nervous.

Emotions and bodily sensations are vast and often untapped sources of profound wisdom and truth. And we all know what happens when emotions go unfelt and unexpressed: illness, physical pain, unwarranted explosions that hurt our loved ones. Like the years’ worth of crap that builds up in our digestive systems, we may not even know what-all is stopping us up.

Fortunately, there are ways to safely feel what we’re feeling so that our unneeded crap is out of us, making more room in our hearts and bodies for that which serves us.

angry-woman11A safe way to clean out your emotional blockages

So what’s going on inside that heart of yours? Are the channels clear and flowing, or is something dammed up that needs releasing? Reserve thirty minutes for yourself and do the following.

  1. Find a quiet place where you can be alone, undisturbed, and can’t disturb anyone else. Take a comfortable seat and close your eyes. Take a few deep, settling breaths. Become aware of your body – its contact with the floor, furniture, and your clothing. Notice the texture of the air you’re breathing. Take note of the temperature in the room, the sounds outside.
  2. Do a quick scan of your body. Start at the top of your head and move through each body part, noting sensations. See if your mind wanders when you get to a particular place. If it does, go back to that part and explore it a bit more. When you start this exercise, you may instantly become aware of an energy that doesn’t belong and is ready to be released.
  3. If nothing comes up during the body scan, ask yourself the question, “what am I feeling?” See what your body tells you in response. Name the emotion or sensation that comes to mind. Try to be specific. Beyond simply being “frustrated,” you might feel angry, or sad, or guilty, or jealous. Rather than “content,” you could be elated, or amused, or even empty. See if you can drill down to the heart of the feeling. There may also be a reason or cause of the feeling – though it’s not as important as the feeling itself, you might wish to name that too.
  4. Once you are in touch with the feelings, check in with which ones aren’t serving you. Often they are detectable by an uncomfortable feeling in your body – almost like an invasion. Or you might discover a lump in your throat that’s been there for days, or that your jaw has been clenched, or your stomach held tight.
  5. Check in with what your body wants to do with that feeling. Do you want to growl? Roar? Laugh? Sob? You may feel like punching a pillow or whacking the mattress with a tennis racket. Maybe you want to run twice around the block. Within limits of safety, do whatever you need to expel the energy and get things moving again.
  6. If the physical expression doesn’t do it for you, I’ve often found that getting a notebook and dashing off a messy letter to anyone – yourself, God, the universe, the person that pissed you off, “everybody” – is an incredibly effective tool by which to express, cry, and heal. Don’t worry about being articulate or fair, or even making sense. Write from the feeling – from the rage, from the pain, from the confusion or the uncontainable joy. Write until your hand gets sore and there’s nothing else that wants to come out.
  7. Resume your quiet seated position, and re-scan your body. What feels different in your body? What is your emotional state? What does your mind do?

Determining your baseline

A regular meditation practice is a great way to get a handle on when things are flowing in your body and mind, and when things might be stuck. Consider spending five minutes a day scanning your body – it will put you in greater touch with yourself so that you know that something’s not quite right and needs to be expelled.

What about you, Pinkies? Anything brewing just below the surface that you do or don’t know about? What do you do to keep the emotional Mojo flowing?

Taking it out on the furniture,

Joy

Tricia Barrett & Lissa Rankin, getting ready to chow on raw foods for the pre-cleanse

Hiya Pinkies. Wow. Time flies. How is it that our Pink Posse cleanse is almost upon us? The week-long pre-cleanse for our group cleansing experience begins Monday, October 12. So this is your chance to join us. Keep in mind, Pinkies. This is a nutritional cleanse. You will not be fasting. During my three cleanses, I have not felt deprived (and trust me, I love my food!) You will be consuming liquids and foods throughout the day to keep your blood sugar stabilized as your body heals itself. So please don’t be scared. If your intuition is yelling for you to join us, this is your chance. Let’s give each other moral support as we do this together, in solidarity, Pinkie to Pinkie.  If you plan to cleanse with us, please join the Green Juice Detox Cleanse Posse on the Pink Posse Forum.  The information you will need to do this will only be available there.

Did you miss the posts about why we’re cleansing together?  Here you go:

Get Your Mojo Back With a Green Juice Cleanse

Tricia Barrett, the Living Foods Expert at Clear Center of Health, the integrative medicine center where I practice holistic women’s health, is going to share her wisdom and lead us in a group green juice cleanse at home.  Tricia has been leading cleanses at Clear Center and other facilities in the Bay area, but we know times are tough and many of you live far away. So we’ve modified the cleanse that Tricia offers to educate you Pinkies about how you can do this on your own at as substantially reduced price from what you would pay to have someone else do this for you.

Many of you have marked this on the calendar and are gearing up to start the Pre-cleanse, so I wanted to give you a heads up about what to expect and how to prepare. I’m going to turn the floor over to Tricia Barrett, so take it away, Tricia! (Three Pink cheers! Hoorah!)

Hi Pinkies! Tricia here…You ready to cleanse? Let’s prepare!sprouts

As a reminder, you will need:

1. A Juicer-required

2. Access to organic produce, including wheat grass if possible (don’t worry, we’ll have alternates for those who can’t do the ideal cleanse)- required

3. An enema bag (available at any drug store) or access to colon hydrotherapy (colonics)- required

4. A natural bristle brush for dry brushing (ideal but not required)

5. Sun chlorella (at health food stores)- optional

6. Systemic Enzymes, which you can order from Hippocrates Institute (or any systemic enzyme will do)

7. Epsom salts

How to Pre-Cleanse (start October 12)
There are a few important things that you can do right now to insure a positive cleansing experience. By eliminating addictive and mood altering foods, you can go through any withdrawal from these substances before you begin juice cleansing. This is the most comfortable way to begin the detoxification process and will make your juice cleanse much smoother.  If you join us too late to do the pre-cleanse, no worries. Come along for the the ride, as your body’s wellness increases by the minute. (YES. That’s by the minute during your cleanse.)

7 days before you begin the cleanse eliminate caffeine, alcohol, sugar, preservatives and additives. By doing this you allow your adrenal glands to rest, recuperate and strengthen themselves for your upcoming cleansing experience. Meat is best eliminated as well, but if you can’t give up that steak quite yet, no worries. The more you eliminate, the more you benefit from your cleanse. Start increasing your water consumption now.

4 days before the cleanse eliminate animal flesh, dairy and wheat. These mucous and acid forming foods inhibit detoxification in the digestive tract, preventing your body from efficiently releasing toxins through the colon. When your digestive tract is mucous free it is more able to absorb the peak level of nutrients provided during the cleanse, as well as achieve a more alkaline pH.

2 days before the cleanse, switch to a diet of 75-100% raw foods. This supplies plenty of fiber and enzymes to put the finishing touch on your pre-cleansing preparation.

lissagreenjuice2smallHELPFUL HINTS FOR PRE-CLEANSING

1. Start your day with the juice of one lemon on an empty stomach, which flushes out the accumulation of the night’s natural toxins. I mix mine with water, stevia and a dash of cayenne to make a kick-in-the-pants morning lemonade.

2. Try eating PINK—(that’s 80/20). 80 percent alkaline foods (think veggies and fruits), 20 percent acidic foods (think grains, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds)

3. Avocados add healthy fats and start to lubricate  your detoxification channels.

4. Try meditation, even if it’s just 1 minute a few times per day.  Your body’s stress levels decrease during meditation, reducing the stress that acidifies your body. When I was eating Hippocrates Institute pristine- all vegan, all raw, I still had a body that was off the charts acidic because my business was stressing me out. Meditation helped me overcome that.

5. Increase your oil consumption- UDO oil is one of the best full spectrum oils available.

6. Drink slippery elm tea—it’s a mucilaginous herb and will start to coat all your  membranes, which will allow for release. Plus, it will soothe your system.

7. Start the alkalinization process and get a great form of chlorophyll. My favorite is sun chlorella or chlorella from Hippocrates Institute.

8. Set intentions for what you hope to accomplish with your cleanse. Are you doing this for detoxification? Weight loss? General health? Are there other things that need cleansing in your life? What might you need to release? Starting preparing your mind, as well as your body.

9. Pray, pray, and pray. Ask the Universe to guide you as you cleanse. Pray just for yourself.  Everyone else is handled. This cleanse is just for you.

Cleanse Before the Cleanse

If you are able to get your body running at peak performance by supporting the adrenal glands, removing mucous and acid forming foods, and fully hydrating before you even begin the juice cleansing portion of the cleanse, you reduce a large amount of stress to your system. This prepares you for a deeper and more fulfilling cleansing experience.

You on board, Pinkies?

This will be the last we post about this cleanse on Owning Pink. For further instruction, make sure you join the Green Juice Detox Cleanse Posse on the Pink Posse Forum. We will instruct you further from there.

Happy Cleansing, Pinkies! Give your body a hug and pat yourself on the back. Your body thanks you for doing this.

If you have any questions about pre-cleansing or the cleansing process, please post them here. If you’d rather communicate privately, please feel free to send Tricia a message via the Pink Posse forum.

Pink & Green love,

Tricia & Lissa

An Integrative Medicine Doctor’s Thoughts On The Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus) Vaccine

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

syringeHiya Pinkies, and Happy Healthy Thursday!

Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock for the past 5 months, you’ve heard all the crazed, paranoid, panicked fuss about the H1N1 influenza (Swine Flu) virus and corresponding vaccine. So let me just start by saying, PLEASE! Don’t panic. This is just the flu. While it can be deadly, it does not appear to be any more so than the seasonal flu, so RELAX. This is no time for conspiracy theories, anxiety, paranoia, and fear. Take a deep breath. IN OUT (don’t you feel better already?) Educate yourself from reputable sources, and trust that you will be just fine.

To add further chaos to the mix, the swine flu vaccine will soon be available, and in some cases, mandatory. Whew! You wanna get Americans up in arms? Tell them something in mandated. We cringe all the way back to our British roots, and it brings out the rebellious child in all of us. Don’t be messing with our freedom.

So what’s all the fuss about and what’s a Pinkie to do about it? It’s all so confusing. Who can you trust? Does the government really have our best interests at heart? Unfortunately, these are questions I won’t be able to answer for you.  But I wanted to at least make an attempt to collect some of the data for you so you can make up your own minds.

In the integrative medicine world, many oppose vaccination in general. I don’t tend to agree with blanket statements. My analytical mind prefers to look at data and analyze what we know, integrating it with what my gut feels and what I think.  In the case of the Swine flu vaccine, my approach leaves me feeling baffled, so I can only imagine how confused the rest of you Pinkies must feel.

In this post, I will attempt to answer some of the questions you Pinkies have asked Owning Pink. (We received hundreds of questions about this over the past few months, so forgive me if we fail to answer your exact question. Bear with us, Pinkies. It’s all for the sake of the greater good, I swear!). Later, I’ll offer some Pink Tips to stay healthy this flu season, vaccine or no vaccine.  Here we go. Deeeeeep breath…

Who is at high risk for swine flu (H1N1) infection?

According to the Center For Disease Control (CDC):

  1. Children less than 2 years of age
  2. Individuals >65 years of age (but this risk factor is tricky. Although the elderly are at higher risk of influenza complications, they do not appear to become infected as easily as younger people, perhaps because this age group has already developed immunity to some related viral strain that young people have not.)
  3. Individuals <19 who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and might be at risk for Reye syndrome after influenza infection
  4. Pregnant women
  5. Individuals with chronic medical conditions requiring ongoing medical care, including:
  • Chronic pulmonary disease, including asthma (particularly if systemic steriods have been required during the past year)
  • Cardiovascular disease (with the exception of isolated high blood pressure)
  • Cancer
  • Chronic renal insufficiency
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell disease
  • Immunosuppression, including HIV infection, organ or stem cell transplantation, and conditions requiring immunosuppressant medication
  • Individuals who have any condition that can compromise handling of respiratory secretions (eg, cognitive dysfunction, spinal cord injuries, seizure disorders, neuromuscular disorders, cerebral palsy, metabolic conditions)
  • Children with an underlying metabolic disorder who are unable to tolerate prolonged fasting

If I might have been exposed to swine flu, should I take Tamiflu?tamiflu

Most healthy individuals who develop an illness that may be swine flu and appear to be recovering do not need medication. The majority of people recover completely without treatment. So who needs drugs? Here’s what the CDC has to say:

  1. Anyone with suspected H1N1 influenza who is not getting better or develops complications such as pneumonia
  2. Anyone who is hospitalized for H1N1 infection
  3. Antivirals should be given as prophylaxis to anyone in the high risk group above who has been exposed to a case of suspected or confirmed H1N1 infection.
  4. Health care workers who were not using proper precautions and came into close contact with an infectious patient

The CDC does not recommend antivirals for healthy children and adults who may have been exposed in the community. Why don’t they want to protect us? Because most healthy individuals will recover just fine and, in the face of a pandemic, drugs need to be reserved for those who need them most. If you or your loved one winds up in the hospital seriously ill, you want to be sure there’s enough medication around.

When will a vaccine be available?

We expect this vaccine to be available by mid-October.

Will the H1N1 vaccine be effective?

This is a very good question, and frankly, it’s too soon to really say. The New England Journal of Medicine reported one trial of 240 adults who received 2 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. Within 3 weeks of vaccination, 97% of individuals given the lower dose and 93% given the higher dose developed antibodies. Will these antibodies actually protect you from getting the virus, given that it may mutate and evolve? No one knows.

(Reference: Greenberg, ME, Lai, MH, Hartel, GF, et al. Response after one dose of a monovalent influenza A (H1N1) 2009 vaccine — Preliminary report. N Engl J Med 2009)

The efficacy of the regular seasonal flu vaccine depends on how much the virus mutates between when the vaccine is manufactured and when you actually get it. For example, during the 2004-2005 flu season, there was only a 5 % match between what was in the vaccine and the actual virus that spread during that flu season. As a result, that vaccine was only 10% effective. In 2006-2007, there was a 91% match, which made the vaccine 52% effective. As you can see, it’s a very imperfect science.

(Reference: Belongia, EA, Kieke, BA, Donahue, JG, et al. Effectiveness of inactivated influenza vaccines varied substantially with antigenic match from the 2004-2005 season to the 2006-2007 season. J Infect Dis 2009; 199:159.)

Will the H1N1 vaccine be safe?

Ah, the million dollar question. The truth is that nobody knows. Back in 1976, approximately 45 million people in the US were immunized against a type of swine flu, but the program was discontinued, in part because an increased incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome was detected among those who were vaccinated. To detect a risk such as this, between 409,00 and 970,000 individuals would have to be tested in clinical trials to determine the safety of this vaccine. So while studies of very small populations do not show any significant risk, these studies are looking at hundreds, not hundreds of thousands of people, and they span only brief times.

(Reference: Evans, D, Cauchemez, S, Hayden, FG. “Prepandemic” immunization for novel influenza viruses, “swine flu” vaccine, guillain-barre syndrome, and the detection of rare severe adverse events. J Infect Dis 2009; 200:321.)

Many are rightfully concerned about the risk of vaccinating an enormous segment of our population, especially when this population includes particularly susceptible young children and pregnant women. The CDC reports that they expect a similar safety profile as they see with the seasonal flu vaccine. So what about the 1976 flu vaccine campaign that got halted? Good question.

For more, read this great article on the Guillain-Barre vaccine.

Will the vaccine have the adjuvants I’ve heard can cause Gulf War Syndrome and other complications?

According to the CDC, only vaccines without adjuvants will be used in the US during the 2009 season, which includes both the nasal spray vaccines and the injections. Because the safety of these adjuvants is unproven, the CDC reports that there is no plan at this time to recommend a 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine with an adjuvant. What does that say about 2010? Uh…they’re not saying.

Who should get the vaccine first?

According to the CDC, the first to be vaccinated should be:

  1. Pregnant women
  2. Household and caregiver contacts of children younger than 6 months of age (e.g. parents, siblings, and daycare providers)
  3. Health care and emergency medical services personnel
  4. Children and young adults from 6 months through 24 years of age
  5. Persons aged 25 through 64 years who have medical conditions associated with a higher risk of influenza complications

Once it is evident that there is enough vaccine, the CDC recommends that people over 65 be vaccinated.

Can I still get the H1N1 vaccine if I’m allergic to eggs?

eggIf you have a severe allergy to eggs, your doctor will help you weigh the risks and benefits. If you’re healthy and have an egg allergy, you may be better off skipping it.

If I get the H1N1 vaccine, does that mean I can skip the regular flu vaccine this year?

No. They’re not targeting the same strains of virus. If you are high risk and choose to be vaccinated this flu season, you will need to vaccinate against both.

If I’m interested in getting the vaccine, how can I find it?

Vaccines will be allocated to health care providers shortly, so your doctor will likely receive the vaccine. If not, call your local public health department.

Is it true that the government is mandating that everyone be vaccinated?

No. But it is true that New York state has mandated that health care workers involved in direct patient care be vaccinated. Many are up in arms. But the edict is clear- get vaccinated or get fired. Are other vaccination mandates coming? I sure hope not, at least not until we know more about this particular vaccine.

I’ve heard that I can’t sue a vaccine manufacturer if something bad happens as the result of getting the H1N1 vaccine. Is this true?

Well, in this country, anyone can sue anyone, as proven by the women who took me to malpractice court for stealing her labia (no kidding. Totally true story. Only lawsuit ever brought against me. And yes, she was psycho and the case was dropped, but not until 3 years and 3 lawsuits later…but don’t get me started, Pinkies!)

But yes, the vaccine manufacturers have been granted immunity from legal liability in the US due to a law recently signed into effect.

Can we trust what the CDC has to say?
I honestly can’t say. I have to say that, as a physician, I have always trusted the CDC as a reliable source of objective information. But I admit that I’m shocked at how they’ve handled this pandemic so far. Maybe it’s my own naivety. I admit. Pandemics are not my specialty, and that’s their job.  But the reaction of the CDC seems out of proportion to the nature of the disease, when I hunt for how I feel in my gut.  After all, it’s the flu, and I live in California, surrounded by great hospitals and fabulous doctors (so maybe I’m spoiled). But seriously, people. Must we rush into a massive vaccination campaign without much data? Where’s the evidence to support safety, efficacy, and necessity? It makes a thoughtful doctor/mother/writer/leader stop and pause…

natural-medicine
What can you do to prevent swine flu, aside from getting vaccinated?

So Pinkies, is your head spinning by now? Mine certainly is. Here are a few tried-and-true Pink prevention techniques that will keep the odds in your favor this  flu season:

  1. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. (Say it three times over. This is your new Pink mantra, and it’s the number one way to avoid getting swine flu). Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, which can introduce the virus into your receptive passageways. If you cough or sneeze, use a tissue and throw the tissue away afterwards. This will help protect you and everyone else out there who is trying to avoid swine flu.
  2. Eat immune boosting foods, and steer clear of sugar. Here are five that can help you.
  3. Citrus. Loaded with Vitamin C, citrus fruits are a yummy, easy way to support your immune system. Grab a glass of OJ, or make some lemonade. Even better, mix lots of lemons into clean water with stevia (a natural sweetener) and cayenne pepper. Not only is it a zingy tasty treat filled with Vitamin C, it also alkalinizes your body, which helps it fight infection.
    Red chili peppers (cayenne).
Cayenne pepper has long been appreciated for its medicinal properties and can help your body during states of  emergency. So chili it up for good health!
    Garlic.
Filled with immune-boosting mojo, garlic has been used to treat everything from the common cold to the Plague. So load up on garlic and give your body a fighting chance.
    Carrots.
Bursting with beta-carotene, carrots give your body a leg up when you’re fighting infection. Drink a few carrot juices to get enough in your body. Sweet potatoes and spinach also contain lots of beta carotene, so eat up.
    Fish.
Fish like salmon, mackeral, and tuna are filled with omega-3 fats, which support white blood cells in fighting infection. Sushi anyone?
  4. Snooze, baby, snooze! Sleep is underrated. When you’re well rested, your body fights infection more effectively. Check out these tips from naturopath Dr. Nicole Sundene.
  5. Give up alcohol and caffeine for a while. Staying sober and decaffeinated helps your body mount immune responses.
  6. Guzzle green juice instead. If you have a juicer stashed under your counter, now is the time to pull it out and load it with kale, celery, cucumber, swiss chard, lemon, spinach, ginger, garlic- whatever you’ve got around that can support your good health. Also, avoid processed foods and eat a whole foods diet.
  7. Try not to drink out of the same cup as others. And avoid sick people, if you can.
  8. Hydrate. Drink, drink, drink pure clean water. It keeps your mucous thin and helps you mucous membranes resist infection.
  9. Try not to touch your nose, eyes, and mouth.
  10. Get your exercise. While this may not be the best time to go to a crowded gym, a long hike in nature can do wonders for your immune system, your general health, and your psyche.
  11. RELAX, and don’t panic. Stress weakens your immune system and makes you more susceptible to infection. Try meditation, deep breathing exercises, guided imagery, yoga, walks in nature, or whatever works to chill you out.

Supplements I Recommend to my Patients For Prevention & Treatment of Swine Flu:

(We offer these at CLEAR Center of Health, where I work. Some of these may not be available over-the-counter)

  1. 10 Mushroom Formula.
  2. Thymuril.
  3. Echinacea. My favorite is Esberitox by Integrative Therapeutics.
  4. Vitamin C supplements. If you take extra, it gets excreted in your urine, so it won’t hurt you to load up.
  5. Probiotic bacteria, which alters the intestinal flora and helps your body resist infection.
  6. Viraclear, made by Integrative Therapeutics.
  7. High dose Vitamin D plus high dose Vitamin A.
  8. If you’re feeling under the weather, take Elderberry syrup. It’s a natural anti-viral and can be particularly useful if your community runs out of Tamiflu and Relenza.

Will I get vaccinated? Will I vaccinate my 3 year old daughter?pig

Honestly, Pinkies, I haven’t decided. If a doctor doesn’t know for sure, it’s no wonder some of you may be confused. This has all happened so quickly. Am I anti-vaccination? No. Not for some things. But do I feel the need to inject a poorly tested vaccine that may or not protect me against something unlikely to cause serious complications in my healthy family? Maybe not. After all, this is not ebola we’re talking about. You’re not likely to bleed out of your eyeballs and croak when you get it.

Frankly, I think everyone needs to take a bit of a chill pill. (Or take a good long hike and start meditating!) But then no one’s asking me.

Well, no one but you Pinkies, who keep asking away.

So anyway, this is the best I can do for right now. I’ll try to keep you updated as more information comes in.

Oink oink (and big Pink love),

Lissa
