Tricia Barrett & Lissa Rankin, getting ready to chow on raw foods for the pre-cleanse

Hiya Pinkies. Wow. Time flies. How is it that our Pink Posse cleanse is almost upon us? The week-long pre-cleanse for our group cleansing experience begins Monday, October 12. So this is your chance to join us. Keep in mind, Pinkies. This is a nutritional cleanse. You will not be fasting. During my three cleanses, I have not felt deprived (and trust me, I love my food!) You will be consuming liquids and foods throughout the day to keep your blood sugar stabilized as your body heals itself. So please don’t be scared. If your intuition is yelling for you to join us, this is your chance. Let’s give each other moral support as we do this together, in solidarity, Pinkie to Pinkie.  If you plan to cleanse with us, please join the Green Juice Detox Cleanse Posse on the Pink Posse Forum.  The information you will need to do this will only be available there.

Did you miss the posts about why we’re cleansing together?  Here you go:

Get Ready for Detox and Cleansing With Green Juice
Get Your Mojo Back With a Green Juice Cleanse

Tricia Barrett, the Living Foods Expert at Clear Center of Health, the integrative medicine center where I practice holistic women’s health, is going to share her wisdom and lead us in a group green juice cleanse at home.  Tricia has been leading cleanses at Clear Center and other facilities in the Bay area, but we know times are tough and many of you live far away. So we’ve modified the cleanse that Tricia offers to educate you Pinkies about how you can do this on your own at as substantially reduced price from what you would pay to have someone else do this for you.

Many of you have marked this on the calendar and are gearing up to start the Pre-cleanse, so I wanted to give you a heads up about what to expect and how to prepare. I’m going to turn the floor over to Tricia Barrett, so take it away, Tricia! (Three Pink cheers! Hoorah!)

Hi Pinkies! Tricia here…You ready to cleanse? Let’s prepare!sprouts

As a reminder, you will need:

1. A Juicer-required

2. Access to organic produce, including wheat grass if possible (don’t worry, we’ll have alternates for those who can’t do the ideal cleanse)- required

3. An enema bag (available at any drug store) or access to colon hydrotherapy (colonics)- required

4. A natural bristle brush for dry brushing (ideal but not required)

5. Sun chlorella (at health food stores)- optional

6. Systemic Enzymes, which you can order from Hippocrates Institute (or any systemic enzyme will do)

7. Epsom salts

How to Pre-Cleanse (start October 12)
There are a few important things that you can do right now to insure a positive cleansing experience. By eliminating addictive and mood altering foods, you can go through any withdrawal from these substances before you begin juice cleansing. This is the most comfortable way to begin the detoxification process and will make your juice cleanse much smoother.  If you join us too late to do the pre-cleanse, no worries. Come along for the the ride, as your body’s wellness increases by the minute. (YES. That’s by the minute during your cleanse.)

7 days before you begin the cleanse eliminate caffeine, alcohol, sugar, preservatives and additives. By doing this you allow your adrenal glands to rest, recuperate and strengthen themselves for your upcoming cleansing experience. Meat is best eliminated as well, but if you can’t give up that steak quite yet, no worries. The more you eliminate, the more you benefit from your cleanse. Start increasing your water consumption now.

4 days before the cleanse eliminate animal flesh, dairy and wheat. These mucous and acid forming foods inhibit detoxification in the digestive tract, preventing your body from efficiently releasing toxins through the colon. When your digestive tract is mucous free it is more able to absorb the peak level of nutrients provided during the cleanse, as well as achieve a more alkaline pH.

2 days before the cleanse, switch to a diet of 75-100% raw foods. This supplies plenty of fiber and enzymes to put the finishing touch on your pre-cleansing preparation.

lissagreenjuice2smallHELPFUL HINTS FOR PRE-CLEANSING

1. Start your day with the juice of one lemon on an empty stomach, which flushes out the accumulation of the night’s natural toxins. I mix mine with water, stevia and a dash of cayenne to make a kick-in-the-pants morning lemonade.

2. Try eating PINK—(that’s 80/20). 80 percent alkaline foods (think veggies and fruits), 20 percent acidic foods (think grains, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds)

3. Avocados add healthy fats and start to lubricate  your detoxification channels.

4. Try meditation, even if it’s just 1 minute a few times per day.  Your body’s stress levels decrease during meditation, reducing the stress that acidifies your body. When I was eating Hippocrates Institute pristine- all vegan, all raw, I still had a body that was off the charts acidic because my business was stressing me out. Meditation helped me overcome that.

5. Increase your oil consumption- UDO oil is one of the best full spectrum oils available.

6. Drink slippery elm tea—it’s a mucilaginous herb and will start to coat all your  membranes, which will allow for release. Plus, it will soothe your system.

7. Start the alkalinization process and get a great form of chlorophyll. My favorite is sun chlorella or chlorella from Hippocrates Institute.

8. Set intentions for what you hope to accomplish with your cleanse. Are you doing this for detoxification? Weight loss? General health? Are there other things that need cleansing in your life? What might you need to release? Starting preparing your mind, as well as your body.

9. Pray, pray, and pray. Ask the Universe to guide you as you cleanse. Pray just for yourself.  Everyone else is handled. This cleanse is just for you.

Cleanse Before the Cleanse

If you are able to get your body running at peak performance by supporting the adrenal glands, removing mucous and acid forming foods, and fully hydrating before you even begin the juice cleansing portion of the cleanse, you reduce a large amount of stress to your system. This prepares you for a deeper and more fulfilling cleansing experience.

You on board, Pinkies?

This will be the last we post about this cleanse on Owning Pink. For further instruction, make sure you join the Green Juice Detox Cleanse Posse on the Pink Posse Forum. We will instruct you further from there.

Happy Cleansing, Pinkies! Give your body a hug and pat yourself on the back. Your body thanks you for doing this.

If you have any questions about pre-cleansing or the cleansing process, please post them here. If you’d rather communicate privately, please feel free to send Tricia a message via the Pink Posse forum.

Pink & Green love,

Tricia & Lissa

Mojo Monday: Imagine Your Dream Life And Write Your Obituary

Monday, September 7th, 2009
rozsavage

Roz Savage in her boat

Hiya Pinkies and Happy Mojo Monday! Today’s Mojo Monday exercise was inspired by Roz Savage, who changed her life by writing two versions of her obituary. Roz was living the life many of us grow up believing to be the dream. She had a successful career, a husband, a home, a sports car, and money, but Roz felt something was missing.

Roz Savage Chose Which Life To Live
Faced with a choice, she challenged herself to an exercise- to write two obituaries, one for the life she was living, one for the life she dreamed she might live. “One-by-one, I shed the trappings of my old life,” she posted on her blog. Checking them side by side, Roz decided her life needed to change. “Little by little I began to realign my life, to put myself on track for the obituary I really wanted.” Since then, she has rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Now, she faces further challenges but is living her bliss, as she rows solo across the Pacific Ocean, trying to raise awareness about the environment.roz savage

My Own Pink Leap of Faith

I can relate to Roz, because I already ditched the life that didn’t suit me. I quit the fancy doctor job with the six figure price tag. I dumped the husband who treated me like dirt. I pursued my art and my writing with vim and vigor, and then I started Owning Pink, with nothing more than a Field of Dreams vision and no clue whether they would come if I built it.

You might call me crazy, reckless, even. You might think me self-absorbed, even narcissistic. And you may think whatever you wish. But the truth is, I don’t care anymore.  I reached a point, after decades of trying to please everyone, when I was ready to stop living the life others wanted for me and start living my own life. When my father died at 60, I realized that life is short- and precious. When he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and realized he only had 3 months to live, he realized he was already living the life he dreamed of living. But was I? HELL NO! Losing Dad (within two weeks of giving birth to my daughter, losing my dog and having my healthy young brother wind up being evaluated for a liver transplant after taking the antibiotic Zithromax) made me reevaluate. If I knew I would die in a year, would I still live the life I was living. No way. So I took a pleap- quit my job, uprooted my family, and began walking a path that landed me at Owning Pink. With no safety net and no sugar Daddy to support me, I had to leap all the way. I had to believe. It required faith.

If I Knew I Was Dying, I Wouldn’t Change a Thing

Today, if I found out I would die in a year, I would do exactly what I am doing. I would see patients 1-2 days/week at CLEAR Center of Health, because connecting intimately with women, helping them get their health and their mojo back, fills me to the brim. I would paint. I would write books. I would be with my husband and daughter. And most importantly to me, I would be here with you Pinkies. Why not travel? Finish all the things on my bucket list? My bucket list is for living. If I was dying, I would want my routine, filled with love, joy, peace, and authentic community. But that’s just me.

Are You Living the Authentic Life You Want?
What about you Pinkies? If you knew you would die in a year, would you live the life you’re living? Are you stuck in a life that doesn’t feel like you? Do you wonder how you ended up where you are? Do you think about shaking it up and taking a pleap (Pink Leap of Faith)? What might your life look life if you were willing to sacrifice security, summon all your courage, and venture into the unknown?

Now pull out your journal, Pinkies. It’s time for your Mojo Monday exercise.Obit

1. Close your eyes and take a few minutes to breathe deeply, focusing your attention on the moment of peace at the end of each out-breath. Notice how your body settles into the rhythm of each breath. Allow your mind to rest a bit.
2. Now, continuing with your deep breathing, write your obituary based on how you are living your life right now, assuming you take no daring risks. Be specific.
3. Return to your breath. Pay attention to the moment of peace at the end of each out breath.
4. Now allow yourself to follow your bliss in your mind. Send your inner critic to time out and banish fear from your mind altogether. Answer this question- What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
5. Now write a second obituary based on the belief that you are living that life.

Don’t just read this exercise, Pinkies. PLEASE DO THIS EXERCISE. You don’t have to share it with us. Maybe that feels too scary for you right now. But promise me you’ll try this. If you feel inspired, please do share what you’ve written with us. We can bear witness to the life your mind has dreamed up. If you feel brave, we can support you while you start to live it….

Remember, you haven’t died yet. Your life is still unwritten. You may not be able to control every aspect of how your life will play out- and don’t try. Understand and rejoice in the mystery of the unknown. But dreaming starts the process. Without dreams, we stagnate. Let’s fertilize our lives and GROW, Pinkies!

Watching you bloom,
Lissa

Mojo Monday: Help a Pinkie In Need

Monday, August 24th, 2009

kirtan1 smLast night, I attended Bakti Benefit, hosted by Dr. Jacqueline Chan at CLEAR Center of Health, where I practice medicine. This event featured kirtan musicians offering healing chants, vegetarian Indian food, massage, and a silent auction, all intended to help Elizabeth Rose Raphael, a Pinkie in need. Elizabeth has Lyme’s disease, and after treatment just started to cure her, her insurance dropped her. Elizabeth’s friends rallied, gathering together to find musicians, chefs, massage therapists, and vendors, who all donated products and services to support this luscious Pink Goddess.

When I arrived at the event, the chanting had already begun. A large group of people sat cross-legged on the floor, while musicians playing the harmonium, guitar, and drums lead the community in devotional chanting. Elizabeth, dressed in all white, radiated pure love, as others gathered to support her.  My 3 year old Siena traveled from person to person, hugging each person in the room systematically, my own little Amma.  The musicians, some of whom regularly provide music at Amma’s retreat center, smiled as they watched Siena, the little crystal child, spread love throughout the room.kirtan2 sm

Although her presence elicited many smiles, we didn’t need Siena to remind us how much love was in that room. Watching a community gather together with the intention of helping one of its own is a blessed thing. Even in these tough times, everyone gave generously of their time, their money, their gifts, and their services.  Elizabeth graciously received, something many cannot open their heart to accept.  As the music of Mukti, Daniel Tucker, Jonathon & Lisa, and Andrew Zenoff & Joss swelled through the light, airy atmosphere of CLEAR Center, people swayed, eyes closed, sometimes holding hands, sometimes resting heads on each other’s shoulders, sometimes smiling.

Watching the community rally to support Elizabeth renewed my faith in love and reminded me that we are all One Tribe. We need only ask others to help us, when we can no longer manage life alone.  Being willing to receive the love and generosity of others is as blessed (and often even more challenging) than being willing to give.

It all got me thinking about how most of us respond to illness, scarcity, and tough times.  How many of us live in fear? How often do we fail to ask for help from those who would lovingly reach out, if only they knew how much we need a helping hand? Why do we not ask our community for what we need? Those who love us would never let us go hungry, or fail to get medical treatments we need, or be homeless. Yet, we diminish ourselves by thinking we don’t deserve to ask for help, that we would never wish to burden anyone. When we limit ourselves with thoughts of scarcity and fear, we fail to open ourselves up to the abundance that surrounds us, if only we’re open to receiving it.

Today’s Mojo Monday exercise:

1. If you know someone in need, open your heart and give what you can give, no matter how small your offering. You may not have money to spare, but a casserole, child care for someone who needs it, a lift to the hospital, reading a book to someone lonely, or helping someone laugh when they’re done crying can make all the difference in someone’s life. Crack your heart open and let the compassion spill out onto someone who needs it. Remember that we are One Tribe, and what you do for your sister you do also for the rest of us and for yourself.

2. If you feel too wounded to give right now, humble yourself and ask someone else for what you need. Don’t let pride get in the way.  Banish ego and let love in. Approach others with a spirit of genuine abundance, and goodness and plenty will fill your life. Watch magic happen.

3. Say a prayer of gratitude, knowing that out there in the world are communities like the one supporting Elizabeth, whose healing has already begun, before her medications even kick in.  You can be part of the change you wish to see in the world. You have the power.  We are pure love, and we can transform our lives and the lives of those around us.

With trust in the power of community,

Lissa

PS. We just met Elizabeth this week, but Elizabeth is coming to live with my family for a while.  She may see this as a generous gift from us, but we don’t see it that way. Through our eyes, we will have the honor of learning to know a new friend, serving her with green juice healing, offering her solitude, serenity and healing. We expect nothing in return, and yet, I know- because these things always work this way- that her presence in our lives will yield new gifts, new awakening, new friendship, new hope, new joy- and most of us, community.  When Elizabeth’s health returns, she will pay it forward, I’m certain. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if only we all behaved this way? Give what you have to give, ask for what you need. Let love rise up to meet you, especially in times of need.

Own Your Body: A Journey Dance With Toni Bergins

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Jacqueline Chan and me dancing our desires

Jacqueline Chan and me dancing our desires

When my partner at CLEAR Center of Health, Dr. Jacqueline Chan, asked me if I wanted to go to a Journey Dance class with her, I couldn’t resist. I had no idea what Journey Dance was, but it sounded appealing, I love Jacqueline, and it’s been way too long since I’ve taken a dance class.

Toni Bergins, our teacher and the founder of Journey Dance, taught a small class in Petaluma before heading down to Esalen Institute to lead a workshop. As a classically trained ballerina who used to dance in a ballet company, I always find myself a bit reticent when it comes to woo woo dance classes. Most dance classes I’ve taken are either rigidly structured (ballet) or completely free form (most dance classes I’ve taken at Esalen). Usually, my inner critic gets way too loud when I’m prancing around free style with no grande plie, paux de bourree action to ground me.

Let Yourself Go

But Toni’s class was a perfect mix of gentle structure and an invitation to experience free form expression. She guided us on a dance through the charkas, starting at our root chakra and working our way up. Then we leaped and galloped and swirled around the dance floor as the music swelled. At one point, she invited us to dance out our frustrations while throwing ourselves into the dance and grunting. For another dance, we embodied our inner Kali, the warrior goddess who embodies both the creative and destructive aspects of our nature. We got down deep into our skin and OWNED our bodies.

As the class progressed, the music, DJ’ed by DJ Root of Groove Paradise, grew progressively more expansive until I found myself, head thrown back, eyes closed, opening my heart to the energy within the room and the love within my heart. The warm, radiant glow within the room grew more palpable with each dance until we were all one throbbing, beating, pulsing breathe, connecting to the Oneness of the tribe we became.

Feel Your Desire

Toni piled an array of colorful silk scarves in the center of the room and invited us to articulate our DESIRE. Letting the scarves represent desire, we chose a scarf- or two- trading them out if we realized we had a deeper desire that another scarf might represent. We allowed these scarves to entwine us, as we danced our desire. What came to me, as I danced this section, is that I have everything I desire right this very minute. I just lack the resources to sustain it unless something changes. So I desire the ability to sustain the exact life I’m living right now. All I need is a little help paying the bills.

But the longer I danced, the more I started finding myself drawn to another scarf in the center, a bright orange scarf that called out to me. What did it have to tell me? Uncertain, I danced. And the scarf spoke, telling me I wanted to open a retreat center for women some day. I’ve never in my life thought this before. But when the thought came to me, my heart sang. Wow. Who knew dance could be so powerful? Certainly a far cry from the pirouette.

Dance From The Heart

Towards the end, we chose scarves to represent our hearts, and we danced with our hearts, holding them close, offering them up to the Universe, however we felt called to interact with our hearts. In the beginning, I became so enmeshed in dancing with my heart that I didn’t notice anyone else in the room. But at one point, I stood back to take it in and witnessed a room full of people loving their hearts. It was extraordinarily beautiful.

Too soon, it was time to go, so Jacqueline and I danced our way back home. The whole thing was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It reminded me of the shamanic journey I shared with my husband on our wedding day. I felt the same heart connection and profound opening both times, only this time I got to dance. It reminded me how much I love dancing and how much I want to reintroduce it into my life.

For years, I danced with my ex-husband. We were the youngest people in ballroom dancing class at 23 years old, and by the time we broke up, we were damn good. After that, I made every boyfriend learn how to dance with me, torturing them with dance lessons and refusing to let them lead. It was ugly. My current husband put his foot down and said NO. The whole dancing with my boyfriends thing hadn’t worked out so well and he just wasn’t gonna do it, by golly.

I Can Dance Just For Me

But during my Journey Dance, I realized I don’t need Matt to dance with me. I just need to dance. Why do I look to him for what I need? Why can’t I just dance with Jacqueline or Joy or by myself? So I’m inspired. I need look no further than myself to fill this void in my life.

What about you Pinkies? What void do you dwell on? How might you OWN what you yearn for and take responsibility for allowing it to happen, without relying on anyone but you and God?

Dancing my journey,
Lissa

PS. If you live in the Bay area, you might see me at Kiera Einhorn’s Journey Dance class at Yoga Source In San Rafael on Thursday nights. Kiera is one of Toni’s students and a lovely soul.

Mojo Monday: Get Ready For Detox and Cleansing With Green Juice

Monday, August 17th, 2009

greensDo you ever feel all gummed up inside- heavy, weighted down, fatigued, and emotionally knotted?  I know I do, but in the past I wasn’t even aware of it. It wasn’t until I did a green juice cleanse that I awoke to how much I needed to do it. Tricia Barrett, the living foods expert who owns Green Resurrection, a supplier of homemade raw foods and green juice, shares her passionate beliefs about why we should cleanse.

Cleansing:

1. Radically reduces the effects of aging by rejuvenating your cells.

2. Creates abundant energy.

3. Promotes weight loss and increased metabolism.

4. Strengthens the immune system.

5. Helps the body maximize its potential to heal from chronic illness.

6. Supports liver function and other vital organs.

7. Restores antioxidants.

8. Maximizes absorption of essential nutrients and aids digestion.

9. Supports healthy brain chemistry, which may help with mood disorders.

10. Balances your hormones.

11. Beautifies the skin.

12. Generates confidence, enthusiasm and joyfulness, enabling you to achieve the

life you desire.

lissagreenjuice2smallDoesn’t that sound like Owning Your Health?  So what do I mean by cleansing?  Our bodies are barraged every day with chemicals, toxins, and other substances from our food, the products we use in our house, the water we drink, the air we breathe- our entire earthly environment, really.  Our bodies are meant to be self-cleaning organisms, and our cellular metabolism is brilliantly designed to rid our bodies of unwanted toxins.  I’m sure it worked well when we lived in caves and ate the berries we collected from the wilderness.  Even a relatively short time ago, before the industrial revolution and commercial farms, our bodies could probably keep up.  But these days, forget it!  We can’t avoid being toxically overdosed, even if we eat healthy diets, choose household products consciously, filter our water, and live in the country.  Which means that our cells get clogged with toxins, instead of processing and metabolizing waste material so we can eliminate it through our kidneys, our liver, our colon, and our skin.  What happens when all this waste jams up our cells?  We get sick and depressed, we age and wither, we gain weight, get pimples, and lose our precious vitality.  In essence, we lose our mojo.

Let’s Cleanse Together, Pinkies!

To demonstrate our commitment to Owning Pink together, I would like to propose that we all join together for a ceremonial and physically healing group cleanse.  Who do you think?  Are you up for it? It requires a commitment, but I promise you won’t regret it.  What would cleansing require?

You will need:

7 days to pre-cleanse and 5 days for the cleanse

A juicer

Organic produce (they can be ordered online if you don’t have access to organic produce locally)

Sun chlorella and systemic enzymes

A little bit of will-power

A mind willing to suspend judgment and allow cleansing to happen as deeply as possible

(Don’t worry. When the time comes, I’ll tell you which brands I recommend and where to get your supplies.)

You in?

What do you think?  Will you do it?  I found my cleanse experience to be a very eye-opening journey- a truly empowering experience. (For more about my cleanse experience, click here). I want to share that experience with you at home. Honestly, it changed my life.  Now, I know we’re all inundated with crazy diet advice, but this isn’t some nutty weight loss scheme.  This is bigger than that.  This is a physical, emotional, spiritual cleanse we’re talking about.  As a physician, I have seen remarkable transformations in everyone I’ve witnessed during the cleansing process.  We all have different constitutions, so of course, you never know how your own body/mind/spirit will respond to cleansing.  But unless you suffer froman eating disorder, it can’t hurt, and it just might heal you.  (If you do suffer from disordered eating, I don’t recommend cleansing with the group.  You may still benefit from some careful detoxification, but I hope you’ll do that under the counsel of a doctor, therapist, and nutritionist.  I do want to protect any Pinkies out there who need more support than I can offer online).

Please, tell me what you think.  Have any of you cleansed before?  If so, how was it for you?  Did you have any good/bad responses to it?  How did it change you?  Do any of you drink green juice or eat a raw foods diet?  Fill me in!  I’m reading, studying, and grilling doctors every day, but I still have much to learn.

Post your comments and tell me whether this is something you want to do.  I’m thinking we’ll do it in 3 months or so, so you can all start preparing mentally for what we’re going to do. If you’re in, set your intention now.

Your Mojo Monday exercise:

  1. Grab your journal and jot down a paragraph about why you want to cleanse.
  2. Write 3 affirmations beginning with words like “May I, I am, I will, Let me…” regarding what needs cleansing in your life.
  3. Commit to our group cleanse, and stay tuned for further instructions to guide you on how to do this in your neck of the woods. Don’t worry. We’ll tell you exactly what you need to know here at Owning Pink.

When do you all think we should do this? Pre-holidays? Post-holidays? I’m thinking either week of October 19 or January 4. (Impossible to cleanse DURING the holidays! Too many functions, too much food, too hard). What date do you vote for?

Cleansing love and green veggies,

Lissa
