20 Tips For Being Beautiful From the Inside Out

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

"Rainbow Woman," artwork by Rita Lloyd, (c) 2004

As women, we are inundated with messages that we are not beautiful enough just the way we are.  We must pluck, dye, lose weight, wax, exfoliate, tone, manicure, highlight, paint, flatten, inject, and dress in haute couture to be “beautiful.” Well, I’m here to say, on behalf of women everywhere- bullshit.

Recently, someone said to me, “Beauty is health,” and I found myself cringing. After all, I know some supermodels who smoke crack, binge and then purge, and suffer from a weak heart. But they make it into the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, and by most American standards, they are “beautiful”. When I heard this comment, I found myself flipping it around in my head. I’d argue that “Health is beauty.” When I see someone taking steps towards whole health, when I see a body being nurtured, a loving mind, and a bright, sparkly spirit, I see true beauty.

It may sound cliché, but I genuinely believe beauty comes from within.  So I’d like to write the kind of beauty article you’ll never see in Cosmo. Not that you shouldn’t put on eyeliner if it makes you feel pretty or get a pedicure when you feel like treating yourself, but I believe that if you follow these tips, you’ll positively radiate.

20 Inner Beauty Tips

  1. Keep your heart open. See others with Magical Eyes and let love glow through you. Look beyond the masks people wear and see the beauty within them.
  2. Begin each day with thoughts of gratitude. Appreciate every experience, even the challenges.
  3. End each day by relaxing every muscle in your body. Start at your scalp and allow each hair follicle to breathe. Move to your forehead, your cheeks, your temples, your smile lines (call it natural Botox!). Relax your shoulders and watch then un-hunch. Relax your chest, your belly, your hands, your perineum, your hips, your knees, your ankles, your toes. Allow every part of your body to soften.
  4. Eat a whole foods diet. For extra glow, include as many raw foods as possible.
  5. Allow 10 minutes per day for stillness. Meditate, pray, breathe- just be quiet with yourself.
  6. Affirm your inner beauty. Make positive statements of affirmation to yourself (i.e., “I approve of myself. I am valuable. I am loving and lovable. I am abundant.”) Say them. BELIEVE them.
  7. Donate your time or money to helping the world. Being in service to those in need helps illuminate the bright shiny light within you.
  8. Exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Even if it’s just a walk around the block, getting your juices pumping helps quiet the mind, tone the body, ground you, and nurture the spirit.
  9. Release judgments and criticisms. Accept that all of us are doing the best we can, imperfect though our actions may be. Give us the benefit of the doubt as we strive to be the best we can.
  10. Let your creativity flow. Find a way to express yourself and allow yourself time to tend the creative spark within you.
  11. Smile often. Not only will it benefit your health, but it will touch others. Even better, laugh out loud. Try laughter yoga. One elderly lady wakes up each morning in her nursing home, laughs like mad, wiggles her arms and legs in bed, and screams, “I’m alive! I’m alive!” The nursing home attendants swear it’s her fountain of youth.
  12. Have orgasms. Often. As regularly as possible. With or without a partner. Talk about inner beauty…
  13. Be authentic. Tell the truth to yourself and others. Let your freak flag fly. Living outside of your own authenticity is never pretty.
  14. Engage in work you love. Nothing like a job you despise to make you scowl.
  15. Tend your spirit. Find spiritual community in a church, temple, mosque, or yoga class.  Commune with the Divine. Let your aura sparkle.
  16. Be free. Dance. Sing at the top of your lungs. Run. Scream. Paint outside the lines. Yodel during sex. Scatter daisies around the boardroom. Pass out balloons. Give free hugs. Get unstuck and set your inner freak free.
  17. Pamper your body. If it makes you feel beautiful to wear lip gloss, give yourself a facial, take a long hot bath with lavendar bath salts, get a massage, or deep condition your hair, go for it!  But do it for you- not for anyone else.
  18. Avoid being mean. It’s a sure way to negate beauty.
  19. Practice preventative health. Why wait until something goes wrong?
  20. Look in the mirror every day and say, “I am beautiful, just the way I am.”

Try it Pinkies! And report back. What works for you? What other inner beauty tips do you have? Let’s shake up the beauty industry and show ‘em what true beauty is all about.

Beautifully yours,
Lissa

Creating and Procreating: Owning What Wants to be Born

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I’ve been thinking about having another baby for four years now. Because I was the ripe old age of 36 when my daughter Siena was born, we started talking about it right away. In fact, my husband and I were so certain we were meant to have at least one more baby that I took my IUD out when Siena was eight months old and we were all ready to go at it again.

Then my stay-home Daddy husband cut two fingers off his left hand with a table saw and all hell broke loose. So we tabled the idea for at least a year, because Matt had pins in his hand from 8 hours of surgery and couldn’t even a change a diaper. Then he had to get two more surgeries. Then we were switching health insurance plans, so I couldn’t get pregnant. It was literally one thing after another.

But I’ve finally come to a certain peace about the fact that I don’t think I will be having another child (sniff, dab). Now, I’m almost 41 and it just seems like the time has passed, and I’m okay with that. But there’s this little pang when I think about it.  It’s almost enough to make me rethink my decision to put my IUD back in…but not quite. Recently, I was talking to Pink Goddess Dana- who has been volunteering her time to Owning Pink to help us turn it into a Pink Business (more on that soon, Pinkies!), and I realized that I’ve been gestating and giving birth for over four years now- and I’m a little tired.  In the past four years, I’ve been busy giving birth to ME.

How it all came to pass

It all started January 6, 2006, when Siena was born. By the spring of that year, the idea that I might leave my job as a full-time OB/GYN was planted, and by later that year, I had taken a Pleap (Pink leap of faith) by quitting my job. I spent most of 2007 gestating what a truly whole health medical practice could look like and dreaming about being of service in a whole new way. That same year, I wrote a memoir. In 2008, I joined an integrative health practice and nurtured the little seed in me until it blossomed. In 2008, I grew Owning Pink in my belly and gave birth to it in April 2009. In December 2009, I gave birth to two more books. Now, I’m about to do it all again by starting the Owning Pink Wellness Center in April 2010. And then, I’ll write my next book.

What wants to come through?

Which leaves me with little time or energy for allowing a baby spirit to grow into a human being inside my womb. With this realization comes more than a wee bit of angst. Am I being selfish for denying my daughter the opportunity to have a sibling?  Have I become a work-aholic with no balance in life? Am I expending my creative energy wisely or might I be better off slowing down and growing my family?

To be honest, I just don’t know. All I know is that the urge to create businesses and books seems to be stronger for me than the urge to procreate. And since I already feel torn between my commitment to serving my patients and Owning Pink and my commitment to motherhood, my inclination is to protect myself from feeling torn even further. Why create more conflict for myself?

Priorities?

Some might judge this as un-feminine. They might think I’m a bad mama or that my priorities are not straight. And they’re welcome to their opinion. But me? I’ve just gotta OWN it. It is what it is. That’s how I feel, that God is using me as a vessel to give birth to other creations, that every book, every blog post, every workshop, every patient encounter is a co-creation between the two of us, that I am becoming a mother over and over again, every time I tap into the divine spark and create something new.

And yet it doesn’t look how others expect it to look. I’m not feeding new blonde beings into the Mill Valley preschool system. I’m not buying new Pink clothes for a sister for Siena. I’m not sitting in the stirrups pushing a baby out into this world. But damn, it sure feels like I am. I feel like I mother at least a dozen new creations right now. Which leaves me feeling like I don’t need to get pregnant again to serve my life’s purpose.

Opinions

Believe me- others feel differently.  My mother would love to have another grandchild. Siena’s preschool teacher would love to meet a baby brother. Even some psychic a friend hired to read me said I had two more baby spirits waiting to get born. But I have to be okay with that. I have to live with the uncertainty, the possible regret, the fact that my family doesn’t look exactly the way I imagined it when I was a little girl dreaming of white picket fences.

It all comes down to creation

Creation can get confusing, can’t it Pinkies? There are days when I can’t tell how my creative forces are best expended. Should I dance with the Divine and co-create a new message to share with the world? Should I co-create a new series of art? Should I co-create new writings? Should I co-create another baby? It gets muddy, I’ll admit. I get confused as hell. We all just do the best we can and pray that what we create is done from a place of the highest intentions and the noblest part of our souls. Then we surrender to living in the muck. (A special thank you to Baby Spirit Coach Elisabeth Manning for helping me sort all this out in my mind!)

What about you Pinkies? Do you ever confuse your creative energy?  Can you tell what you’re supposed to create next?  Do you think giving birth to babies in any way resembles giving birth to businesses, art, writing, or other creative projects? Am I totally off my rocker here?

Let’s talk about this. I honestly think it’s such rich, juicy stuff. Giving birth is so inherently what we as females are all about that it nearly defines us. Yet, can’t we expand our concept of what it means to bring life into the world? How many creations have you squelched to give birth to babies? How many babies have you neglected to have because you were busy in business?  Are you so busy serving your community, your family, or your job that you’ve forgotten to give birth to YOU?

Dana, I’d love it if you’d explore this conversation in another post- maybe help us talk about sacred commerce, balancing our creations, and bringing Pink into the workplace.  And Pinkies- if you have wisdom to share, post comments, write a blog post on the Posse blog, or send something you write to Joy@OwningPink.com. I’d love hear more about what you all think…

Let’s talk, dear ones….

Creating & creating & creating,

The Many Colors of Valentines Day

Dearest Pinkies, it seems only fitting to have Owning Pink’s Lovemuffin Extraordinaire and Think Pink founder Megan Monique Harner write today’s Valentine’s Day post. So without further adieu, I give you LOVE. Take it away MeganMuffin!

Love

Love a word that has endless definitions. It can be taken out of context, too far into context and is a common emotion that humans share across the world at least one time in their lives. For those of us who are lucky enough to acknowledge it, it is an everyday sensation.

Valentines Day

Love in terms of Valentines Day takes on a whole new meaning. I have encountered some who enjoy the spirit of Valentines Day whether or not they have a special cuddle buddy. Others are less enthusiastic about the holiday because they feel it only exists to exploit the saps that get a kick out of receiving gifts of chocolate, over priced jewelry and roses. No matter your stance on this gaudy day o’ love, I want to offer you a different meaning for it all.

Where Do You Stand with Love?

Love is an emotion that is not easy to come by for everyone. You might feel as though you have a lack of love that surrounds you, or maybe your don’t know how to share your own love. Perhaps, it is even true that you did not have love in your life as a child and it has transferred over to today. No matter the reasons of your past, you can still start today anew, live a life full of love- cuddle buddy, or not. And to those of you who are swimming in love daily, this invitation still stands for you as well.

What Valentines Day Means to Me

For as long as I can remember, Valentine’s Day has been my favorite holiday (aside from the 4th of July!) I have been lucky enough to have love in my life everyday that I can remember. I think a large part of it being there is that I choose to acknowledge its existence. To me, Valentine’s Day is celebration of the Love that exists EVERYWHERE. Not just in intimate relationships, but the love I have for my family, friends, and above all- myself. I take this Holiday of Love and use it to get excited about this feeling that is FREE to EVERYONE. I love to my fullest on this day; strangers, cab drivers, movie theater attendants, waiters, boyfriends, girlfriends, moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, cousins, friends, ex-boyfriends, E V E R Y O N E. Especially you Pinkies.

Pink

What’s In It for You?

Pinkies, imagine what it would be like, if for a moment you stepped out of your mind frame that Valentine’s Day was something to either preen over because some lover adores you or curse because you don’t? What if you started celebrating LOVE for its own sake instead. Where would that leave you? Would you be honoring yourself with a bubble bath, pink roses and chocolates (heck, maybe even a massage?) Or perhaps you will gather with your friends and a good chick flick while you basque in each others awesome-ness. Whatever it is you choose to do, do it with a large amount of love in your heart and see how much further it gets you. Valentine’s Day is something to take advantage of. Personally, I think it is incredible that we have a National Day O’ Love- how lucky are we?!

What about you Pinkies? What are you doing to celebrate today? Tell us your stories- all of them. If you’re whooping it up in roses and chocolate land because you’ve found the love of your life, share your joy and let us celebrate with you (I’m serious.  Let’s share of happy days as well as our struggles. Those of us who haven’t found that will relish your joy on this special day.) If you’re annoyed by this Hallmark holiday, share that too. If you’ve found love here at Owning Pink and it’s changed you, tell us how you feel. We want to know all the facets of how V-day affects you. As always, we just want to be real. What’s real for you?

Loving YOU (and me,)

Megan Monique

A special Valentine’s Day message from Owning Pink’s founder Dr. Lissa Rankin:

Pinkettes….daw-lings…I am sending each and every one of you extra special love, healing juju, and virtual rose petals raining down upon you while I wrap you in my arms and tell you how much I care. Really. Do you feel it? Happy Valentine’s Day. Let’s truly, collectively make this a day of Love. Please make an extra special effort to use your Magical Eyes, don your LOVE BUBBLE, and put your love out into the world today.  Reach out to someone who might be lonely and need a hug. Buy flowers for the girl behind you at the checkout counter in the grocery store with the tan line where her wedding ring used to be.  Give a hug to a widow at church who might need one. Call your single girlfriends and plan an impromptu LOVE FEST potluck party.

And please do me an extra special favor and make this a special day of expressing love to your fellow Pinkies on the Pink Posse forum. Send them messages of love. Reach out to those who live near you and meet for a cup of tea.  Pay extra attention to those who are posting on the Posse blog and make sure everyone feels nurtured. Hell- write on the Posse blog and let us nurture YOU.  Let’s make this day about US- ourselves and those we love. Let’s truly celebrate love the way it was meant to be celebrated (with big PINK balloons and banshee dancing and rock and roll and moments of stillness in which we remember who we are.) Okay? You in?

Holding you in both arms and squeezing extra special tight today,

Lissa & the rest of the Owning Pink team

Owning Creativity: A Cleansing Poem

200236712-001

Happy weekend Pinkies. Joy here with another amateur pile of verse inspired by cleanse week, and the first rays of the sun we’ve seen in weeks in the bay area…

Rainy Season

Sometimes it does
Take that long
Endless torrents – cleansing tears
Half the world
Washed away
The other half
Growing in
Fungal
and Green
and New
Overwhelming that
Which lives
Vicious roaring flow
Viscous muddy motion
Threatening all it supports
Emptying heavens
and eyes
Washing out ducts
and gutters
And still it falls
and you wonder -
How could there be
So
Much
Water? And
Whence does it come? And
How much more
Can the ground hold? And
How have I not
Yet
Crumbled
Shattered
Broken
Imploded
How can I be this soggy and still
Alive?
And yet. I am.
And all
The better
For
The rain.

Owning – REALLY Owning – Creativity

arts-poetry

Hey Pinksters. Joy here. Last weekend I attended a retreat that ignited in me some serious, action-spawning revelations.  I will write more about the experience itself when I’ve had a chance to wrap my heart around it; however, one of the biggest understandings to emerge was the profound need for me to connect with creativity in a way that is deep, fierce, and full – in a way that connects me directly to source and invites through all that needs to be expressed in a way that only I can express it.

Not accidentally, the workshop leader was poet/philosopher David Whyte, who framed his talks and exercises with exquisite, impossibly delicious pieces of verse – both his and others. It would make sense, then, that when I answered the call to create, such creation would start to dribble out of me in stanza format.

So here, in the safe, non-judging embrace of you Pinkies, I am going to put forth some thoughts on a topic for which I’ve been trying to find words for a while. The message I’ve been struggling to convey came through almost effortlessly in the form of a poem (or what looks like one, anyway).

Thank you as always for holding the space and bearing witness to the infancy of … whatever this becomes.  And here we go.

Ungracious grace

I don’t want to feel better
I don’t need a cheerleader
Or a pep talk, someone to
Say I’m none of the ways I think I am
Or all of the ways I think I’m not
I don’t need you to hurrah me onward
Make me larger than
The whisper of life at the moment
Encourage or murmur
That really it is all okay
Because it’s not and
THAT’S OKAY.
I’ll heal by not healing
Find friendship in myself
The strength comes through the living
Not being caught mid-fall in pillows and fed
Tea and comfort cakes.

Oh, some day I’ll need you.
Don’t go far please.
Keep needing me for the time
Even if I shut you out in pursuit of my own
Pure
Aliveness.
Stay close at hand and know
That all these words
Will be swept away and irrelevant
As a cockle fragment in a tide
As soon as I will take the
Next breath or
Wake up new.
Save your encouragement
Until I ask for it. Until
I approach, arms outstretched
Pleading wordlessly to be held
Coddled
Bathed in the kindness that
I know has always been there.

As it stands
Know that when I cry
My soul work’s being done
The spirits within
Rolling rocks down hills and
Aiming slingshots at translucent
Blue
Bubbles
Of energy
Smashing that which they know
No longer serves me
I can’t remain stoic
In the face of that and I know
- I know -
They will begin to build
Something new
When the rubble’s cleared and
Unless you have a soul backhoe
You’re not needed for cleanup.
Take a break
Have a beer
Feet up, reclined,
Watch me do my dance
Feast with your eyes
Feel free
Help yourself
Bear witness but
Don’t take part
When I fall apart. Please

Wait
To hear
From me.
