What's Wrong With Our Bodies, Anyway?

anorexia

"Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less."

This is just one of the messages accompanying a bold series of nude photos of Katya Zharkova, a U.S. size 12, in the January issue of PLUS Model Magazine, which asks its readers "What's wrong with our bodies, anyway?"  Quite obviously, there has been a fair amount of publicity and plenty of controversy as some praise the statements made in the shoot while others claim that endorsing a fuller figure is no safer than promoting the current fashion model ideal.

Moving Meditation: A Pole Dancing Party

Moving Meditation ~ A Pole Dancing Party

I recently attended a private dance party where beautiful women moved in the emotionality of their vulnerability and magic happened. I was asked to work as the photographer and videographer - in between dancing - and this short video below shows what happened at this wonderful party. Some of the women at the party had never touched a pole in their lives. There were others who have been students of various studios for many years, most of which study at Sheila Kelley's S Factor, including myself.

How to Experience A Deep & Intimate Soul Connection

deep soul connection

I just got back from the beach where I was watching the sunset and gentle waves, and thought to write to you what is deep in my heart right now. If you are an old soul, you will know what I am feeling here, I’m sure.

Today was one of those strange days of feeling a bit weird about everything. As usual, I was looking for deeper answers to what I was feeling, what is REALLY going on inside, and how to make sense of it all. I know I am not alone in feeling weird at times, especially as things keep heating up and heating up, and shifting at tremendous speed – we are all living in extra-ordinary times are we not?

So here's what I've come to realize…let me know if this resonates with you.

New Reflections - Through My Child's Eyes

Oh how I love sharing the Owning Pink stage with our devoted community members. Pauline Campos is one of our newer community members. However, it took her no time to jump right in and share the things that light up her world, with us. Enjoy the read, Pinkies! - Megan Monique

I woke up at 6:30 and was still rushing to get out of the front door by 8:30. We had a 15 minute drive ahead of us to make the bus for the pumpkin patch, our lunches were packed, and Buttercup was sitting pretty on the couch watching TV while I rushed into the bathroom to pull my mexi-fro into a pony tail. I glanced at the clock as I walked by. It was 8:15am. We were going to cut it close, but we would make it.

I had just put my head in the sink for a quick wet down when I heard Buttercup call me from the living room.

Nip/Tuck: Trying To Look Like Celebs?

At the risk of sounding completely self-absorbed or vain, I’m going to put this right out there as I see it. I was considered a Pretty Girl growing up, getting regular praise for something completely out of my control and not of my core self — and as a result, feeling strangely uncomfortable about it from a very young age on. Maybe I didn’t totally believe it, or more likely I saw it as a very small window of “opportunity” relative to my lifetime, and so I actively and deliberately chose to work on developing my personality, sense of humor and personal growth in multiple areas. I expect(ed) a lot of and for myself (as my mother drug-pushered onto me) attributing my talents to not hard but smart work.

But enough about me. This is what I think about us.

Creating Time for Creative Time

Before I became a mother, people were always trying to warn me about how much my life was going to change. In particular, they loved to tell me how they (and, by extension, I) would never again have enough time. “Whether I’m at home or at work, I feel like I never have enough time for anyone,” they’d say. “Never mind finding the time to clean the bathroom.” And time for themselves? “Forget it. I haven’t had time to read a novel since my oldest was born. Ten years ago.”

Does Beauty Need to Hurt?

I have a secret

While it’s true that I care more about women making peace with their bodies than most people, and although I live my life committed to supporting women in liking who and what they see when they look in the mirror, I was one of the first in line to see Sex & The City II when it came out a few weeks ago.

Mini Adventures: The Guadalupe Mountains

When I was driving through the Guadalupe Mountains, I couldn’t help but be stunned by their beauty. I have never seen mountains before - only the rolling hills of Austin, Texas (which is another beauty in and of itself).

When I arrived at my friend Johnny’s apartment, he informed me that The Guadalupe Mountains are actually a very dangerous place. Since Juarez, Mexico is just on the other side of the mountains, there are ‘bandits’ that patrol the area searching for people to abduct. Apparently the human trafficking industry is quite profitable.

Owning My Dreams: Living In The Now

My Dream Life

Three months ago, I decided my dream life would be to travel the United States, seeing new places, people, and things and taking in all the different lifestyles along the way. Seeing as how I work for Owning Pink (from my computer) and have relationships with men and women all over the country (or world, for that matter,) through the Online Pink Community, I had the resources and means to do just that. On February 16, 2010 I took off on The Magical Eyes Tour leaving Dallas, Texas and heading toward Northern California- mapping it out as I went; living my dream life.
