TEDxFiDiWomen: Speaking Your Truth Is Good For Your Health

TED

I recently got up on the blue backlit stage to deliver my first TEDx talk at TEDxFiDiWomen in San Francisco, and as I stood there in the spotlight, I felt the gravity of what I was about to do.

Looking out over that sea of people who were anticipating what I was about to say, I felt the butterflies in my belly, but they didn’t keep me from leading off my TEDx talk with a bold statement - “Caring for your body is the LEAST important part of your health.”

11 Natural Treatments For Depression: An MD’s Tips For Skipping The Prozac

natural remedies depression

As an MD, I’ve watched too many of my colleagues yank out anti-depressant samples every time a patient starts to cry. So on behalf of physicians everywhere, let me apologize for our trigger-happy prescription-writing behavior. I don’t mean to diminish the pain someone who is depressed might experience. But tears are healthy. Sadness doesn’t always need treatment. And it’s important to remember that the pain muscle and the joy muscle are the same. If you can’t feel one, you won’t feel the other.

That said, clinical depression sucks, and if you’re someone who suffers from it, my heart goes out to you. I’m in no way intending to diss anti-depressants or suggest you ignore your doctor’s advice. I know anti-depressants can be life-saving for people. But unless you’re suicidal or otherwise in dire need of urgent medication, before you dose up on side-effect laden pharmaceuticals, it’s worth considering some natural treatments that might help lift your mood.

Wild Feminine

Please welcome fabulous new blogger, Tami Kent, a women's health physical therapist, founder of Holistic Pelvic Care for women, and author of Wild Feminine: Finding Power, Spirit & Joy in the Female Body. Welcome, Tami!

It was the hot August night when I went into labor with my second son that my New York agent sent out my book proposal to 20 publishers. I felt like I was birthing twins, but I found out later that none of the publishing houses would take on the project. The details: I had given birth to a beautiful boy, I was writing a book that had no publisher. Sometimes we focus on the details instead of the journey, and in doing so end up feeling like we are failing on some level. How would I tell my baby to follow his dreams when my own creative dream had gone adrift?

Are Anti-Depressants Good or Evil?

anti-depressants

I’m sitting in the green room, about to appear on Daytime TV, and the television is blaring in the background. Now mind you, I don’t have television in my home so I’m a bit out of the loop. But since I’ve been sitting here, I’ve seen one anti-depressant ad after another (mixed in with ads for lawyers who want to help you sue your doctor if you had complications from your anti-depressant). WTF?

Nia: Embody The Skin You’re In

When I heard that Debbie Rosas, founder of the Nia movement classes was going to be teaching a dance class at Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts, I thought “Sign me up.” I grew up taking dance classes and was in a ballet company in my younger years. Someone told me Nia was part dance, part martial arts, part healing arts, and as a dancer/doctor, I thought, “Perfect!”
