Are Men Really Happier Than Women?

The other day I got one of those email forwards – you know, one of those anonymously written messages that sometimes comes with an introductory “This made me laugh” or “So true!” from the sender. These days it’s rare that I get such an email, and it’s even more rare that I read it. But when this one appeared in my inbox, I just had to look, in that can’t-stop-watching-a-train-wreck sort of way. Its title: “Why men are never depressed.” Its first line: “Men are just happier people -- What do you expect from such simple creatures?”

I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge myself for all my accomplishments today. Wanna know what I did? I woke early, meditated for a few minutes, took the pup outside and smelled the clean oceany air, made tea, cleaned the kitchen, chanted the Gayatri Mantra, cleaned the bathroom, had toast, went to my rockin’ dance class, took the recycling to the recycling center, picked up the kids and brought them home, made lunch, cleaned up, did laundry and sat down at the computer to write this post. And it’s only 2pm.

Everything will get... easier?

I recently read a post on Facebook from my young teenage cousin that read, “Everyone says that life will get easier. What I want to know is, when?” A friend suggested that, “They just say that. It never does.”

I began to think about my life and whether it is easier. I wondered if my life is better than it once was -- which was my cousin’s true question.
