It took me 6 months to pick up the phone, I was so gripped by fear. I really wanted to offer to do a workshop for my local chapter of the National MS Society. But I couldn’t get myself to pick up the phone. Sharing my story and what I had learned about diets and multiple sclerosis seemed like a huge risk.
Why all this hesitation, when every bit of my being knew I was meant to inspire and educate, and make the complex, practical and doable? One big friggin’ f-word.

As you may remember, last year I decided to leave the security of my J-O-B and work for myself. It was one of the scariest things I've ever done.
I was leaving behind an almost 20-year track record of salary and benefits, a salary and benefits my family had always relied on. I can promise you I didn’t take the decision to quit lightly. I spent many sleepless nights thinking about every possible worst-case scenario.
But I knew the job I once loved no longer offered me the same meaning and satisfaction. I knew that coaching and entrepreneurship completely lit me up inside. I knew I was talking about my one precious life. And so in the end I thought, how can I not quit?

The new moon in dreamy, enlightened Pisces sends us all on a fantastic voyage this Tuesday. It’s time to set sail in the waters of spirituality, imagination, and an uncharted exploration of our own subconscious minds. New moons are our launching points, the results of which culminate six months later, under the light of the corresponding full moon. Circle August 31, 2012 as the date of the Pisces full moon: it’s anyone’s guess where we’ll drop anchor then. If we feel “lost at sea” this week, the answer is not to splash around furiously, trying to regain control. Pisces is the sign that’s associated with surrender. Lean back and float: that’s how we’ll ride the waves and get our “sea legs.”

"We resist the great temptations, but it is the little ones that eventually pull us down.” – Edith Wharton
If you’re like me, it can be hard to find opportunities to merge your “ideal” schedule with the one that life tries to hand you without your input or permission.
As you go through your day, the challenge is to make sure that your own dreams and goals are just as high up on the list as your other priorities, like family, friends and work. And it really is a challenge. But finding the balance is so worth the effort.

Happy Labor Day loves! In honor of the day I thought I'd offer up some signs that mean that the work you're laboring over is actually your life's work.
When I work with patients, I always ask them whether they’re doing their life’s work, because I truly believe that how we spend most of our day, and whether it’s in line with our life’s work, affects our health. When I ask a woman if she’s doing her life’s work, way too often, she stares at me blankly.

At three o’clock in the afternoon, it’s pretty easy for me to be kind and compassionate with myself. I can feed my body green juice, sit in meditation and treat myself with loving kindness, bless my body with yoga or a hike, and receive a nurturing massage.
But sometimes, at three o’clock in the morning, I find it practically impossible. On those dark nights of the soul, the voices of my Gremlins become deafening. The voices usually start in dreams, when I’m vulnerable and my defenses are down. And then the voices get so loud they wake me up, and the battle ensues in real life.

Last night, when I went to sleep, life was peaceful. This morning, my coastal Northern California town and more than 50 countries are being threatened by a tsunami alert and many parts of Japan have been devastated by the tsunami triggered by an 8.9 earthquake early this morning.
It’s a vivid reminder that everything can change in a blink. While I crave the illusion of certainty, I know that it’s just that -- an illusion. Many people died this morning, people with big dreams they figured they’d pursue next year, confessions of love they would whisper tomorrow, family members they would forgive later, self-doubt they would overcome some day.
Some day may never come. Today may be all there is.

This fall, my soul brother Chris Guillebeau and I found ourselves on parallel, simultaneous book tours, which led to lots of texting, near misses in airports, and shared shelf space at book stores where we did signings only days apart. For the few months of my book tour, I had just an inkling of what his travelbug life must look like (although it’s hard to compare book touring in Florida to rocketing off to Easter Island).
I’m sure he needs no introduction because Chris is all over the internet with his fabulous blog about unconventional strategies for life, work, and travel. And his fabulous book The Art Of Non-Conformity, which I reviewed here, is sure to skyrocket to the NY Times Bestseller’s List. And you’ll be hearing more from him here at Owning Pink, since he is joining our team of Owning Pink Bloggers!
