I was listening to the radio recently and heard an interview with Ryan Vogelsong, pitcher for the World Series champs S.F. Giants. He shared how he was complaining about some of their friends to his wife one morning saying, “ They don’t seem to be happy about their lives.” She replied to him with, “ Ryan, not everyone gets to live out childhood dreams like you did and still do.” He was humbled by what she said, and became more compassionate for others and more appreciative of the life he has. What I got most from his interview was that he never lost faith in his dream and always “believed” he would one day pitch in the series.

My daughter is a stickler for routine. If a change occurs without her knowledge, you will find her in quite a tizzy. Yesterday the weather report called for storms and possible tornadoes. I'd told her the night before that I might not be able to walk to school to pick her up. Panic flashed across her face. I assured her I'd do my best not to change the routine and sent her to bed.

We all know how debilitating fear can be right? But it doesn’t have to rule your life! I’ve found that in my own life if I can make friends with my fears, accept that I have them and that they do surface at times, and then to choose to let them go instead of dwell on them—I spend so much more of my life feeling good, safe, and free. I also believe that in order to truly be able to let go of our fear we need to substitute it with something stronger that vibrates at a higher frequency. I have willed stuff into being. Lot's of it. Will will willing willfulness. And if you dared to tell me (brave soul, you), in the midst of my willfulness, that I should let go of my expectations, (gasp!) I would have gone stone cold, or snortle-laughed you off, or pressed delete. Because I thought expectation was a key ingredient to manifestation. Turns out it's a major distraction. And I'm done with it. For now. (One day at a time 'n all that.)

I was noodling around on the Google keyword tool with a business coaching client the other day, and I discovered that 2,740,000 people per month Google search “How to be spiritual,” which kinda blew my mind. It made me think of my 5 year old daughter Siena, who we’re pretty much raising as a Buddhist who loves Jesus. My very Methodist mother wanted to take her to church one day and Siena, who knows how to meditate but hasn’t spent much time in Sunday School, said, “Nana, I don’t know how to do God.”

For some of you that may be a pretty ballsy statement—for others it may seem like an unrealistic pipe dream. Still others may want to believe in miracles but encounter resistance. Why have miracles become a cute concept we tweet about or a possibility we turn to only when all hell breaks loose? Why aren’t miracles an everyday occurrence, a moment-to-moment thought, an expectation?
