I was just asked by my awesome new friend SARK to write about why I write. Now mind you, I write every day. For hours. Writing is what I do. I've written three books, countless magazine articles, and over 350 blog posts, in addition to the private journal writing nobody sees. Writing comes totally naturally to me. And yet, faced with this task, I found myself paralyzed. How do you write about writing? I mean I'm a big fan of Anne Lamott's Bird By Bird. And she does it so brilliantly! But I struggled. Then I muddled through. This is what came out.
From the time I was six, when a family friend gave me a leather-bound blank book and invited me to write in it, I have been a writer. I was offered my first publishing deal when I was 11 (I turned it down -- they were my private stories, after all. Sheesh!).

I relish a good organizational system as much as creative freedom. The answer for me (and maybe for you) is structured flow.
1. Positive procrastination...all timing is divine ... all of it. I’m not a procrastinator, by any stretch. But my habit of “holding off” on certain things used to confuse me, since I’m such a wham-shazam activator on most things. I finally realized my seeming neglect of some things actually was a deeper inkling of right timing. If something didn’t really “feel” like a priority (despite logic and deadlines), it probably needed to wait on my clear will or that of providence. I am always amazed at what can happen when you wait: things often take care of them selves or conditions improve in ways that make doing what needs to be so much more effective.

There’s a lot of talk these days about the Law of Attraction. They make it sound so simple. You just wish for something, and then- POOF! Your fairy godmother appears and you get exactly what you want. Just like that.
Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But how can that be? If it worked that way, we’d need to do nothing more than make three wishes and, like any good fairy tale, all of our dreams would come true. So why doesn’t it work? Let me tell you a secret … it does. It just doesn’t work that way. What do I mean? Get comfy and I’ll tell you a little story.

At dinner the other night with a group of girlfriends, life coach Joy asked each of us, “What’s calling you?” Way to get a group of giddy, slightly tipsy girls to shut up and take notice, Joy! The question stunned us into silence, but we were amazed at what came up.
