Is It Your Fault If You Get - And Stay - Sick?

I am currently writing the hardest chapter in my book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself.  Any time you write about self-healing, one painful issue comes up for any sick person. “If I can heal myself and I’m still sick, is it my fault?”

As a healer at heart, I think blame, guilt and shame have no place in the therapeutic relationship, but how should I address the fact that we have the power to heal ourselves without blaming sick people for their illnesses?

How To Say No

how to say no

An Owning Pink reader asked me to write this post on how to say no. She wrote, "I searched high and low on the web to find how to say “no” in a finite manner. From Oprah to many self help gurus, most advise the not so friendly way - and when it comes to family - it’s a different story than saying no to a car salesperson. How can I make someone understand no is simply NO? Some kick-ass pointers, Lissa Rankin style, would be stellar."

The Guilty Woman's Guide to Claiming Her Worth

"We resist the great temptations, but it is the little ones that eventually pull us down.” – Edith Wharton

If you’re like me, it can be hard to find opportunities to merge your “ideal” schedule with the one that life tries to hand you without your input or permission.

As you go through your day, the challenge is to make sure that your own dreams and goals are just as high up on the list as your other priorities, like family, friends and work. And it really is a challenge. But finding the balance is so worth the effort.

Lessons in unexpected places

We are not church going people, but we attend one time a year for the childrens’ service on Christmas Eve. It is mainly because our kids ask us to take them and we feel a sort of obligatory duty to expose them to church if they are asking. We figure they will listen to the pastor speak about love, kindness and being a part of something bigger then themselves. All good stuff. This year however, it was I who learned the greatest and most unexpected lesson.

How To Accept the Gift of Self Pleasure

self pleasure

So maybe the bustle of the giving-to-everyone-else is over, or maybe it's not for you. But in my continual effort to help us all bring our sexuality fully into our lives -- attacking that last bastion of self liberation keeping so many of us from being all us all the time -- I want to give YOU a gift this holiday season. If you're like so many of us -- feeling guilty about taking time to yourself or taking time to pleasure yourself -- I want to give you permission to do so. (And if you don't feel guilty, I want to give you an excuse!)

No Really, I Love Mondays!

I recently came across this post on the blog, Working Moms Against Guilt, and it spoke to me. I too, look forward to Mondays. Sunday blues? Not me! I rejoice on Sunday night -- not because I am that excited to go to work, but because nothing I do during the week is ever as hard as being home with my children.

Needing to be Needed

The other day, a totally brilliant colleague likened self-care to the oxygen mask drill on airplanes – specifically, the part about always affixing our own mask before assisting others. In other words, if your own ability to take a breath is compromised, how in the world can you be of service to anyone else? “Basically, if you don’t take care of yourself,” she told a client, “the rest of us are hosed.”

Not All Women are Natural Mothers

The beginning

I was so sick.  I had been vomiting every day, several times a day for about a week.  If I wasn't running to the bathroom I was laying on the couch unable to function as a result of this strange "June Flu."  This flu of mine was so severe that I had even called off work a few times in the last two weeks AND this flu was so body altering that I wasn't even getting my period.
