Loving the Warriors... and the Haters

I remember September 11th like it was yesterday. The first thing I remember is that my kids were in school about three and half miles from the smoking wreckage of the Pentagon. The next thing I remember is that my husband’s office was between the White House and the Capital – where the fourth plane was headed -- and that he couldn’t get to the kids because everyone was running, driving and walking out of the city for their lives. The next image that swims into view was me -- stuck in Los Angeles for a week away from my family and friends in NY and DC who were suffering so terribly. For the first and last time in years, I was glued to CNN to watch the tragedy unfold. Even LA shut down for three days, the American People were so shocked – and afraid.

But then what I remember was love. The great outpouring of support for the victims and their families -- the calls for tolerance and not to continue the cycle of hate. My neighbors and country responded to those calls – for a while.

Religion, Misunderstood: A Reply to "Make Love, Not Burning Qurans"

Yesterday, I read Lissa Rankin’s article “Make Love, Not Burned Qurans” and started to reply to some of her questions: “Why must we let our faith divide us, rather than unite us? Why can’t you let me believe what I believe, I’ll let you believe what you believe, and we can love each other anyway? Why must we let religion, hatred, and fear get between us and the Divine? If God is love, where is the God in this church? And what are we to do about it?” As I got into my reply, however, I realized I had an entire post inside of me. Graciously, the Owning Pink editorial staff agreed to let me write a response.

Hating Those Who Have What We Want

I can’t tell you how often I’ve heard the phrase, “You’re so skinny, I hate you.”  It’s an especially difficult phrase for me to hear, since I was once so fat that I felt nothing but hugely unlovable. 

What does it mean when we utter that phrase to slender women – sometimes even total strangers?  Does it mean we hate them?  Is it supposed to be a compliment? 

How could “hate” ever be considered a compliment?
