
"Hey, Dad!"
My father looks at me with empty eyes, and then says, "Hey, eh Sylvia." He remembers my name now, but at the rate his Alzheimers is progressing, I bet it won't take long before the disease takes that away too.
He doesn't notice anymore how that effects my mom, but it does. She just does her job in taking care of him, but it takes out it's toll on her. I am happy that she finally sees what it does to her, and that she has reached out to ask for help in caring for him.
All this has made me wonder: how can you be your authentic self as you see your parents deteriorate? How do you keep your light shining bright despite your sadness?

I talk a lot about things happening for a reason, the grand master plan of the Universe, synchronicity, and the overall meant-to-be or not-meant-to-be-ness of life. And it’s pretty easy to stay on my fairy dust and sparkles train when everything is going smoothly, I’m meeting the right people, cash flow is good, and I’m proverbially walking on sunshine.

Not long ago, my son and I ended up at a Sand Mandala ceremony guided by Tibetan Monks. I just vaguely remembered that something about monks was going on at the Chinese Gardens, and we just happened to arrive as the ceremony was beginning. And there was a prayer carpet in the front row that was just the right size for us to sit together, crossed legged and curious. When things are that charmed, I always pay closer attention.

As the New Year approaches, I can’t help but think that I am not the embodiment of who I truly feel I am. Every year I make the same resolution -- to lose weight. Some years it works, but over time the weight always comes back. This year the change must go deeper, it must be a spiritual journey towards embracing my entire self-the shadows and the light. This year I will own my health!

I’ve taken on a de-cluttering project. I’m pretty good at letting things go. I’m quick to give away old clothes and kitchen odds and ends that are no longer used. Two years ago, I even gave away the “wedding crystal” because after ten years of marriage my husband and I had never even taken one drink out of those glasses. But I had no idea how emotional this de-cluttering project would be.
