If Jesus Gave A TED Talk

Having just faced the challenge of distilling my message down to 18 minutes for a TEDx talk I found myself looking at a blank computer screen, wondering what I would write as the Christmas post for my blog. And I thought “What if Jesus had only 18 minutes to share the entire New Testament?"

Finding Peace With Chronic Illness

Love your body

When I was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I felt like I was walking in a fog. A thick, stew-like fog. I didn’t know what to do, where to turn. I couldn’t see or think clearly.

But that quickly changed when I had to re-enter the real world of responsibilities, obligations, and demands. All I wanted to do was crawl back into bed and make it all go away.

Sound familiar?

When Things Don’t Go Your Way. . .

It was 6:25 am when I left San Francisco to head to Vermont to keynote the women’s conference Zest Fest.  My Virgin America flight to Boston went smoothly enough, and in spite of the gusty winds, dense fog, and heavy rain, the plane landed with just a few bumps. But it turns out I only had an hour to transfer to my connecting flight, a little puddle jumper that would take me to Lebanon, New Hampshire, where the conference coordinator would pick me up and drive me to Fairlee, Vermont.

33 Signs You’ve Found Your Life’s Work

Life's Work

Happy Labor Day loves!  In honor of the day I thought I'd offer up some signs that mean that the work you're laboring over is actually your life's work.

When I work with patients, I always ask them whether they’re doing their life’s work, because I truly believe that how we spend most of our day, and whether it’s in line with our life’s work, affects our health. When I ask a woman if she’s doing her life’s work, way too often, she stares at me blankly.

How to Experience A Deep & Intimate Soul Connection

deep soul connection

I just got back from the beach where I was watching the sunset and gentle waves, and thought to write to you what is deep in my heart right now. If you are an old soul, you will know what I am feeling here, I’m sure.

Today was one of those strange days of feeling a bit weird about everything. As usual, I was looking for deeper answers to what I was feeling, what is REALLY going on inside, and how to make sense of it all. I know I am not alone in feeling weird at times, especially as things keep heating up and heating up, and shifting at tremendous speed – we are all living in extra-ordinary times are we not?

So here's what I've come to realize…let me know if this resonates with you.

An MD’s Thoughts On Why Not To Freak Out About Radiation From Japan

radiation japan

While heroic workers battle the threat of nuclear meltdown in Japan, a different kind of fallout seems to threaten the peace of those of us in the US. As fears that radioactive particles will float across the ocean and strike the United States escalate, we seem to be paying less attention to the tragic loss of life and peace in Japan and more on how this might hurt us right here at home.

Some of my friends are fleeing the west coast in search of safe haven further east. Others are dosing up on potassium iodide in an attempt to protect themselves (as evidenced by those who are stockpiling potassium iodide in spite of the advice of health officials who are telling us to chill out). Still more are just plain freaking out. I’ve gotten at least a dozen cautionary emails just today from people who are encouraging me to be afraid.

Embracing My Fragmented Life

It is my pleasure to announce on this glorious Saturday Posse Party, a dear friend of mine, Caren Schmidt. One of the many pleasures of being part of the Pink Community is that we are able to not only support each other through our spiritual evolutions, but we are also able to be present in the moments of expansion. It is my honor to share with you one of the moments of Caren's personal growth.

Make Love, Not Burned Qurans

A church in Gainesville, Florida is planning on burning a stack of Qurans on September 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country -- and I, for one,  just have to scream, “NO! This is not the answer!” We are not a nation based on hate or discrimination. Fighting hatred with hatred serves nobody and hurts many.

Politicians from both sides of the red/blue divide (from Hillary Clinton and Obama’s advisors to Sarah Palin), as well as the Pope, General Petraeus, and almost 9000 people on a Facebook page aimed at stopping the madness all agree that this is simply preposterous, disgraceful, and un-American. Not to wax poetic about revolutionary war values, but this country was based on religious freedom first and foremost. How can we condemn those who act out of fear and hatred to hurt those in this country if some of us are doing the same? Didn’t this Gainesville church learn anything in kindergarten or Sunday School -- like “two wrongs don’t make a right” and “love thy neighbor as thyself?” I mean seriously, people. Grow up.

Giving and Getting Joy When You’ve Lost Your Mojo

Every time I get sick, I promise myself that I’ll never take a healthy day for granted again. I vow to be mindful of how much energy is coursing through my body or how clear my head is. This usually lasts for a week or so. But when I lost my mojo last year, I took a similar vow to appreciate the mojo when I got it back, and this one has stuck.

Holding Space for Oscar Grant

I started to write this post sitting at home in Oakland, CA on Thursday evening, July 8, helicopters overhead and sirens in the streets as our city reacted to the verdict of the Oscar Grant-Johannes Mehserle trial. The ruling of Involuntary Manslaughter in this case (of a white police officer fatally shooting a young black male -- who was unarmed, cuffed, and already on the ground) is largely viewed as unjust. The community has been bracing itself for this verdict for weeks. I, for one, am left speechless. Which is usually a good time for me to start writing.

So, here goes.
