Independence Day AHA: Living the Questions

Today, on Independence Day, I am speaking in front of the congregation at my Unity Church. It will be my first ever public-speaking engagement. I had what I considered a huge spiritual aha about two months ago and decided to make that the theme of my talk. The fact that I am presenting it on the 4th of July is even more appropriate because for me, the experience has been a ticket to freedom.

Before I became a mother, people were always trying to warn me about how much my life was going to change. In particular, they loved to tell me how they (and, by extension, I) would never again have enough time. “Whether I’m at home or at work, I feel like I never have enough time for anyone,” they’d say. “Never mind finding the time to clean the bathroom.” And time for themselves? “Forget it. I haven’t had time to read a novel since my oldest was born. Ten years ago.”

Owning This Moment: Overcoming Your Monsters

pink monster"Be Here Now. Live in the Present. Live in the Moment." So goes common advice from the life coach, the therapist and the spiritual guide. There really isn't anywhere you can turn anymore without some enlightened someone urging you to put aside worries of tomorrow and yesterday in order to concentrate on making the precious moment in time you occupy RIGHT NOW full and completely experienced. The theory is that when your mind and heart are in the present moment – even the painful moment - you are not wasting energy on things you can't control. And by achieving emotional and psychic energy efficiency – mindful of the present at the expense of the past and the future - you will live a fulfilled and happy life.

Riiiiight.
