When Mean Girls Lash Out

mean girls

Leading up to Mother’s Day, I thought about writing a post about the many blessings in my life, including my gorgeous 5-year-old daughter and my adoring, sexy hubby. After all, if you watch the Hallmark commercials, you’d believe that Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate, right?

But I did what I often do and decided to sit in meditation and let the Universe tell me what message would best serve the highest good of the Owning Pink community. And the day before Mother’s Day, I was led to write this tribute to childless Mommies, to honor all the women without children who give birth and mother in other ways. Then, on Mother’s Day, I wrote a love letter to every person for whom Mother’s Day is no cakewalk, particularly those whose mothers didn’t live up to the Hallmark fairytale.

And then on the day itself, I went up to Sonoma County to celebrate the day with my family. And when I got back to my computer that night, I was shocked to see that, in addition to many tender, touching, and heartfelt comments, one or more mean girls snuck in and decided to kick me in the gut.

What American Idol Can Teach Us About Sisterhood

American idol Sisterhood

According to this CNN article, American Idol front runner Pia Toscano may have been voted off by catty female fans who, rather than supporting a sexy, talented sister, wanted to see her booted.

WTF?

I’m not a huge fan of reality TV shows, so I’m a bit out of the loop on this bit of juicy gossip, but I do LOVE the singers that come out of American Idol and religiously download all the music to my iPod, so this comes near and dear to my heart in spite of my reality TV objections. Not only am I bummed that they booted the woman about whom former Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson tweeted, "I cannot believe they just eliminated Pia! ReAlly..???? Long as she walked away with that voice she will be alright!! Just hate to see talent like that go!"

I’m also bummed to think that perhaps this singer with star power got the boot because female fans were playing favorites with the cute boys, instead of supporting a superstar sister.

Are You A Feminista?

feminista

Today, many modern day feminists (aka “feministas”) want to reclaim their power without giving up the feminine. You can be a powerful, fierce, kick-ass, successful woman and also happen to have a hankering for pink fur sandals, pedicures, sparkly bling, drum circles, green juice, and goddesses. Being a feminista means being authentic in all walks of life. For some, that means burning your bra. For others, it means wearing pink boas. As far as I'm concerned, true feminism means the power to choose -- blue suit or pink evening gown, full-time career or stay-home parenting, weight lifting or pole dancing, sweat suits or bikinis, braless or lacy thongs.

Yesterday was my pink business partner Dana Theus’s birthday, so this is for you Dana. Many of you may not know, but Dana has been volunteering her valuable time as a marketing consultant for Magus Consulting to help Owning Pink thrive. And she does this out of pure love for our mission. So this is a post of gratitude, to my dear friend and savior. Without you Owning Pink wouldn’t be what it is today. Happy birthday love!
