How do you feel about disappointing others? How about being disappointed yourself? I’ve recently noticed how much of my conscious and unconscious attention is focused on not disappointing others, while at the same time protecting myself against being disappointed.

My mentor Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, author of Kitchen Table Wisdom, spends a lot of time talking about generous listening in the programs she teaches such as these and in the Healer’s Art curriculum she developed for medical schools, which I had the privilege of participating in as a practicing doctor.

It isn’t always easy to trust the process. I can say that with a sense of intimate knowing because I spent the last year trusting the process. Not always knowing exactly what that meant or what the process even was. Making decisions that few people understood or agreed with. Uprooting my entire life, twice, in less than a year, because it felt right, because I knew somewhere deep in the core of my being that I was walking a destined path. It was the end of the summer and I was injured.
“No sweat,” I figured. Nothing a little yoga wouldn’t mend in a couple of days. . . but for some reason, it didn’t. After a massage, Acupuncture and Ayurveda it only got worse. This had never happened to me before. I was terrified.

I’m not suggesting that every relationship should be mended. Some are probably better left torn apart. But if you - like me - feel saddened by someone who has cut you out of their life, then you’ll get where I’m coming from. This letter is for anyone who disagrees with how I live my life enough to cut me out. (You know who you are.) And it’s for anyone else who doesn’t like how you live your life too. Feel free to pass it on. . .
