Five years ago, after nearly a year of hobbling around painfully on a deteriorating right hip, I had hip replacement surgery. A few months later, I was able to wear shoes with laces again. Black shoes, light as air on my feet, with grey and black laces that I could now bend over (huzzah!) to tie into tight loops.
